I wonder what fans of Miracleman from around Moore time thought of this comic.
It basically made all the previous stories a dream and then made their childhood superhero a super edgy character.

The story is great, but you have to wonder what was the reaction of the people at the time.

John Byrne was a kid living in the UK around the time Marvelman was published (to the point where when he discovered Captain Marvel for the first time he thought Captain Marvel was the ripoff at first). He didn't like Moore's Miracleman.

I mean, he's right. Abnett and Lanning did the same shit with Rocket Raccoon and Darkhawk. I didn't care about those characters beforehand but I can only imagine how their fans felt about basically their entire backstory prior being retconned as a delusion.

The thing about Twilight is that it's very obvious that Chaykin is well-versed in Golden and Silver Age sci-fi and is capable of dissecting it on a literary and cultural analysis perspective. The difference between Twilight and other stories where everyone is turned into edgy assholes is that Chaykin at the very least respects the source material as literature.

The idea is the horror that there's noting special about the Superman; he could be mass produced as simply a weapon of war. He just BELIEVES that he's special because his conditioning gives him a mythical hero style explanation for his powers. He could have equally been programmed to believe that Christ gave him his powers if that's what Britain needed to win the war.
