Making a neutral thread that doesn't start off with shitting on the movie.

I don't mind if you guys shit on the movie in this thread either, but I want to at least have one where we don't start off doing that.

The baby and the armadillo feel like shitty filler, you could cut them out of the movie and lose literally nothing
Rips off way too many elements of avatar the last air bender
Protagonist is painfully boring, she acts like a emotionless robot almost all the movie
The other dragons are just sisu’s model recycled, I wanted all dragons to look different and have different personalities but they all look like clones
The magic crystal was supposedly made of dragon magic, making it a powerful weapon against the monsters but later this is contradicted in a stupid way saying it was just confidence all along

The baby can't be cut without losing the finale. But it's screen time can be cut a bit (I'm thinking of the scene near the end where it's delivering a message). The screen time in general is padded out by a lot of jokes which I find amusing enough while watching it but definitely hurt the story overall by taking time away from what is at the core a good drama. And the silly anachronistic jokes are actively harmful to immersion.

I liked the armadillo though, and Raya riding an armadillo escaping from Namaari on a tiger is a lot cooler than both of them running on foot.

Yeah if you cut any of the sidekicks the finale doesn't make any sense, which is why this movie should've been a tv series. We could've gotten five seasons of Sisu.

There's a lot of good ideas and imagery in the film but doesn't quite work all together.
The sidekicks really needed some work - you need someone from each region I get that but they didn't quite gel together for me. I'd age up Boun a little bit and then make Noi the age current Boun is while also dropping the monkeys - they didn't offer anything. I did like Tong for what little time he had.
Also stating what everyone else has complained about already but Namaari really needed some re-working. Either make her sympathetic from the start, make her initial betrayal accidental, show her agonizing over her part in the world falling apart a bit more, just something.
And Sisu was more charming then I thought she'd be - I didn't think I'd like Awkwafina in the role but it worked.

For what it's worth I did enjoy the movie a lot, the visual design is fantastic and you get a strong sense that the places Raya visited is real from the visuals alone even if we didn't spend much time there. The bits that are funny are absolutely hilarious (Sisu's imagine spot with Namaari comes to mind), and the core drama works for me even if it could be made stronger with more screen time. /co/ is being too nitpicky as usual -- if they applied the same dismissive logic to the Disney classics you'd think they were terrible as well (Beauty and the Beast's moral is Stockholme syndrome! Lion King's moral is that some people are born superior and fuck the hyenas!)

The plot was a little busy though, which is why a lot of people think it woulda done better as a tv show or a miniseries. overall it was a fun romp. but nothing totally earth shattering. Sisu was fucking adorable in it though and I can't oversell that aspect enough.

In Liok King , the moral of the story is not outspoken, it is shown,same in Beauty &Beast.
In Raya, the morL of the story is explained by expositipn dialogues, psinfully. It makes the morL eadier to understand for little kids, but it also invites for literal interpretation, unlike Lion King.
it's a double edged sword.

The main threat is a vague darkness thing that turns people into stone.

My biggest problem with the movie is not really that the characters are weak but how it is trying to be hip. This is supposed to be a timeless epic story yet the characters talk like it is modern day. Sometimes this works and sometimes there are entire movies built on this but this is supposed to be an ancient legend. So when Raya does the "lol, you wonder how did I get here, let's rewind back" and then the lolis use nerd and fan unironically it takes me completely out of the setting.

I'm not alone in thinking there were so many scenes where the characters should have said nothing and let the acting portray what they wanted to say instead? You know, classic "show, don't tell?"

Is it actually worth a watch, on the merit of it being a "Disney" movie? I watch the trailer and it looks like a duller, albeit more stylistic mashup of Brave and HTTYD, and then i hear all the backstage decisions and are reminded of why i don´t want to support Disney, but is this actually worth the dollar?

Problem is a lot of modern animation don´t know hot to balance the writing with the art form. CGI has moved animation away from the production format of animators also acting screenwriters (think early-to-mid Pixar movies or the way Miyazaki micromanages every storyboard with an unfinished script), back to something like Walt Disney´s method; producer commisions screenplay, animators are told to make screenplay

Issue is, producers are hellbent on pandering, and dependent on who you pander to. Execs who doesn´t give a fig about animation has too much control now

>The Heart clan leader tries to unify the clans to be one nation again

>Namaari ends up betraying Raya and leads her clan to the spot where the crystal is hidden
>All the clans are tipped off by the signal Namaari uses and all five clans begin to fight over the crystal
>They break the crystal in the struggle and the Druun are freed
>Raya watches as her father and her entire nature are turned to stone by the Druun
>Raya only survives because the dragon shards can repel Druun temporarily
>Spends the next 5-6 years searching for Sisu and hoping to resurrect Sisu to drive the Druun away

Its not a "knockoff" in so much as all cultures have moderately altered traits of other cultures they interacted it. The reason everything is mishmashed together the way it is, is because Disney is more obsessed with creating inter-regional cultural identity for Asia (and dick-sucking China in the process) than they are in the US-Europe sphere.
Think of the town square in Frozen 2, supposedly a scandinavian pre-industrial nation, filled with people of ethnicities from all over the world

Among the better fics I've read:

- An AU story in which Namaari refuses to help her mother get the gem and is exiled from Fang as a result

I think that's the crux of the movie; the botched message.The message itself is fine and works sort of, but it's a particular line andthe lead up to the message of it being trust all along is what tarnishes it. The big problem I feel is how the movie always paints the humansas the bad guys in every capacity. The Druun are born out of human discord and created the first calamity- somehow? Apparently everyone was living in harmony in one big hug box so how did the Druun come about in the first place? And then it was the humans who created the division of nations which only fuelled the Druun, it was the humans who broke the stone and it was the humans that killed Sisu. It's all these negatives and thensuddenly turn around and go "Nooo we all trust each other now", it falls flat.

I got my own idea on how to fix it and you only really need to change the backstory/prologue, but feel free to shit on it in any case.

Instead of the nations dividing because of the first catastrophe, the divide was always there from the beginning, not for any real reason, it just always was. And instead of the Druun being "Born out of human discord", they're just "born from discord", they exist as a natural part of the world; that way them existing in the first place makes sense. There doesn't have to be a "And then the fire nation attacked", the particular cause of what made the Drunn stronger can be left vague because it's natural discord. Then the rest of the backstory can go as normal, the humans fall first (I think that's what's implied anyway, it would make sense cause you could subtly say the humans didn't get a chance to band together) then it was down to the last 5 dragons, then Sisu.

That's all I think the movie needs, instead of just constantly putting humans down, they just got the short end of the stick and the results of the first disaster made everyone distrusting of each other.

Most of the "good" Disney movies have simplistic plots that don't give much room to fuck up. They make it up by pacing and emotional focuses.

I think /co/ was just never going to like this movie because the message is too optimistic for them. Even if Namaari hadn't blamed Raya for Sisu's death, she still likely wouldn't have died or faced any real punishment and /co/ can't stand stories like that. People are even comparing her to Hitler in this thread, which goes to show how black and white their thinking can be when the only real life person they can think of to compare her to is freaking Hitler. Once she found out Sisu was alive she ran back to Fang to tell her mom they didn't have to keep jealously guarding their piece of the gem, that the whole world can be fixed, just for her mom to be like "aw sweaty that isn't how the world works :)". Namaari is like, 20 at the most, having conflicting feelings in this particular setting isn't a crime. /co/ can say "I wouldn't have done what Namaari did" but there are definitely people who would have. I agree the movie wasn't perfect, but I'm seeing comparisons to Catradora and I'm not really feeling it, because Catra came back from WAY worse than Namaari did.

I'm going to chalk this up to "it's just magic", kind of like the family shrines in Coco. Like that's just how real life shrines work. You put something that you think is important to whatever you're praying to on it and pray to it. She didn't NEED the pendant but it contributed.

I'm gonna guess that full maps of Kumandra that also show all of its rivers are extremely rare in Raya's time, and that the map she had was made with the idea in mind that someone could use it to try and find Sisu.

She was a kid sure but it was her introduction as well which leaves a lasting impression. Add to it she's the antagonist until the last act and we just didn't see enough good in her to justify what happens.
Also I think there's a middle ground between "let's kill her" and "you are now a beloved friend". I don't want Namaari killed I just wish her character was better.

Yeah, I actually DON'T blame Raya for being trigger happy during that scene. I thought both of them were coming from very realistic positions. But anyone who knows basic storytelling beats could tell Namaari wasn't going to shoot Sisu, but I guess Disney wasn't comfortable with Raya having a REAL moment of weakness with tragic consequences and so they included the finger twitching.

It was ok, but a bit underwhelming. The world building seemed half-baked. Heart and Fang got stuff, Talon got a bit but and underdeveloped leader, Spines got less, Tail got next to nothing. The message was pretty contradictory given what happens in the film. Sisu always wants to be optimistic and trusting, but doing this has a negative outcome in every instance except the final part of the movie. Raya's dad got shot, Sisu nearly got petrified, Raya got robbed, Sisu and Raya got trapped by Tong, Sisu got shot. But after all that apparently trust is still the answer, it's not great. I really liked Sisu's design and animation, especially when moving, running, flying, swimming. They really got the divine creature aspect well done. The VA work was fine except for Awkwafina, she just sounds really hoarse like someone who's smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for the last 5 years. I absolutely loathed the modern parlance.

Kelly LOVES voice acting, I can't see her not coming back for a Raya series. She just did the Croods sequel too, and was just talking with Cissy Jones (Lilith from the Owl House) on IGN today about how much she loves voiceover. I think Disney's patched things up with her, and she practically burst into tears when they did that Disney Princess tribute video with all the old Princess voices welcoming her to the club so to speak.

Just finished watching it a couple hours ago. It felt like a by the numbers Disney movie. Like they were experimenting to get the right mix of diversity virtue signaling and Chinese pandering for maximum profit.Raya being blamed for Ferret Sparkle's death was stupid.
Anyway, it was all pretty bland and inoffensive. Not something I would actively want to watch again.

My breakdown is that Sisu, as a title character after Raya (technically) they should both have been the focus. Sisu was a huge draw and she didn’t do much of anything. Everybody was under the impression that Sisu was necessary to save the world, she has a much bigger reason for wanting to than Raya does even. The story could have had a ton of emotional weight on Sisu but she seemed too aloof to it. She didn’t act as a mentor character, Raya was much less naive and much more capable than her, the only times Sisu helped was getting the boat moving and stoping Namaari from killing Raya at spine. And I guess just bringing up the idea to trust people. But she’s proven wrong multiple times throughout the movie because she keeps almost getting killed, she becomes just as much a side character as any of the others. She was just the first one that got picked up.

She wasn’t part of the climax at all and she was actually killed as a plot device to start it. So they didn’t need her dragon powers to use the gem.

The problem with the end is that trust needs to be earned and Namaari didn’t do shit to earn shit.

If there was a conflict during the journey between Raya and Sisu then that time to build trust over the course of the adventure would be great.

The problem is the druun are physical manifestations of the cost of human conflict and they had to push one of each from each tribe together to trust people and the cast was full.

I’m sure restructuring the character relationships would involve a much larger shift in the end trajectory of the message but i tend not to think about an overarching message of a story and enjoy that every character will learn something a little different by the end that they needed.

I’m still thinking on exactly what could have been the story instead, but it’s not necessarily aiming to be as similar as possible to what we got.

She should have just redeemed herself right at the moment she met Raya and Sisu on the outskirts of Fang instead of pulling a weapon on them. At least then the movie's moral might have made some sense. But no, the people who made the movie wanted to have a big epic final fight scene that just ended with Namaari giving up anyway.

I got the same feeling, they definitely had the material to make a season out of the story. It would have given more time for Raya to learn to trust other people instead of turning 180 degrees at the climax to trust a dragon slayer she wanted to kill five minutes earlier.

She's about twice as tall as a human when she's standing upright, and maybe a bit longer when she's all stretched out. I found this a while ago when I was still doing some doodles of her and it helped a lot with working out the scale. Her head is big and her arms are deceptively long, but she's not massive or anything. That swing scene probably shouldn't be taken as gospel anyway because Disney's known for stretching/squishing their character models a bit for comedic effect.

i've watched it 4 times already. music was good and had variety. i don't get the hate. yeah, it's not perfect. there wasn't a scene that i particularly hated. maybe sisu's death, because it felt hamfisted. characters either didn't have a lot of development or it happened suddenly, but the movie gives you enough information to figure it out and change of heart at the end was intentional. it's understandable to call that shitty writing. big picture or take home message was good. i liked it and no i'm not a dragonfucker.

Honestly I didn't even hate it as much as I was disappointed by the mediocrity. Decent character and plot setup but the follow through was bad. Raya wasn't an interesting character and instead of working with three or four they just kept picking up characters for no particular reason except maybe to try and showcase how everyone is losing their loved ones to the technoclouds. Too bad they were a flatline and with the monkey and baby even annoying. The best disney movies are always about the characters and how they interact and change during the movie, and Raya learning to trust because dragons do trust and therefore good isn't very compelling. Why not have not-zuko join them halfway through the movie and have the main character work their way to the ultimate conclusion like that? You're already ripping ATLA off, might as well steal one of the best parts about it and give the audience a reason to believe not-zuko is reformed.

so you complain about the movie copying atla and want them to do it even more? not-zuko was so supposed to be hated. another thing that was hamfisted. it's simllar to how ahsoka was characterized to be hated. not saying you're supposed to eventually like or forgive the character, but i saw it as the movie trying to make or force you understand what raya's feeling. the overall message of the movie wouldn't be as powerful if not-zuko joined midway and got some kind of redemption.

Get rid of the forced side characters, focus on the core cast of Raya, Sisu and not-zuko and their relationship. Make Raya and not-zuko gay as fuck, whatever, all I want is good character writing and not "I'm such a dragon nerd" and "She likes dragons maybe she's not a bad guy". You can do all of these even in a kids cartoon.

And that's the point I'm trying to make. So much of the movie felt lazy in comparison to earlier disney movies and the plot reminded me of the slew of recent chinese fantasy movies, with more or less the exact same feel and story beats. That's not a good thing.

I honestly blame the screenwriters. They were out of their depth and didn't know how to write a compelling script. And that's fine, not every single movie can be lion king or wall-e. It's just very easy to see how this could have been better.

Look, some movies like to ride on the previous successes of a company or a director to attract their audiences. It`s a valid strategy but it has an associated toll... If the movie is relaying on the status of being a Disney movie it stands to reason to be judged as such because the brand is associated to expectations. I wasn`t even particularly harsh all things considered because honestly the movie didn`t make an impression. It`s bland and forgettable and i`ll probably forget all about it within the week. I expect better than that from both Disney and Pixar (but then again i grew up when they used to make good shit and am not the intended audience of this)
