The idea of Ozai as a Zuko gone bad, who was badly neglected by his father in favor of Iroh until his desire for love and attention warped into one for dominion and glory, has a lot of potential. It would also add another dimension to his favoritism for Azula: he basically projects himself onto her as the more talented (he thinks) second-born to be passed over as heir in favor of mere birth order. He treats Zuko shitty because he sees Iroh in him and takes out all his resentment of his older brother on him.

Of course, Azulon should also have a reason. Maybe Ozai was a late birth, one that killed Ilah. Maybe he was always a shitty neet and a bit of a coward hanging back while Iroh boldly stepped into the front.

Meanwhile in the first season and a half or so, not only was Zuko pretty obsessed with honor, he also put himself in danger to protect people under his command. For lack of a better term, Zuko believes in the righteousness of his path, and the rules/traditions that were given to him.

I didn't consider that, but I'm still not feeling it. Neither Ozai nor Azula seem to have a cause beyond power, only goals to get them there. Maybe it was Iroh's influence, but even when Zuko was in the Agni-kai (sp?), Azula seemed gleeful.
Maybe that's just Azula. Even at this worst Zuko didn't have that snide look that we see in Ozai or Azula, only determination. The only time we see a similar determination in Ozai or Azula is when they're currently loosing whereas it's Zuko's default personality

It even makes Zuko shine brighter - he succeeded in keeping his honor and morality where Ozai failed.

That'd be dope to see, so long as we kept the comic and Korra people away from it. I love seeing people pyrrhic success at the cost of their humanity.

I kind of wish Zuko had been given more agency in the show, he's always going on about destiny, even in Book three. I'd especially have liked a counterpart to Aang's encounter with the fortune teller (people can make their own future), having Zuko realize explicitly at some point that he can choose his destiny

Ozai was deliberately designed to resemble an older, un-scarred Zuko and Azulon blatantly preferred Iroh over him. The parallels are already there.

Agreed. Seeing Ozai go from bright-eyed boy eager for daddy's affection to a scheming monster willing to murder his son for power would make for a cool story. You could even show that with his humanity he'd sacrificed any real capacity for joy, leaving him a stunted wreck that only knows how to claw for more and more and doesn't even find any happiness in it, making it clear that even in victory he hasn't really won anything worth having.

I wish he'd just manned up and stabbed Ozai as the Blue Spirit on the DoBS, then just cancelled the comet plans as the new Fire Lord. Destiny can suck it when millions of lives are on the line.

Kill Azulon AND Ozai, Zuko defaults to Fire Lord, and you wind up ruling the Fire Nation yourself as Regent and Dowager Fire Lady. new head canon; due to the Spirit Realm being mostly sealed off in recent centuries and especially due to being completely neglected by an Avatar's attentions for a Century due to Aang being frozen, it's having a negative effect on the physical world, among other things reducing fertility in humans, if the connections between the two worlds hadn't been forced back open during Korra's time as Avatar humanity would have shriveled away into extinction within another century or two at the most

Man stop trying to make sense of the politics in ATLA/LOK, you are going to hurt yourself anons. They are character driven stories first, not worldbuilding/plot-driven stories.

For example, why would Zuko and Kuei only have one kid? Why was the main counter-revolutionary group against Zuko in the comics easily defeated by a bunch of mentally ill cosplaying girls? Why weren't there more groups like Gilak's in North and South who were mad that the Fire Nation basically didn't get punished? Why were more Earth Kingdom citizen upset at the creation of the United Republic when whole ass families got seperated by a border basically imposed by the Avatar because of muh future mixed family feels.

You are looking for a certain depth that doesn't exist in this series anons. I am trying to look out for you guys.

Nice headcanon, unfortunately the connection between the worlds isn't the natural order. The two realms were seperrate until Vaatu broke the barrier at some point. Which would suggest that the two realms being connected is a bad thing.

Had an idea in this vein, would be set about 200 years after Korra's time, the protagonist and current Avatar is the fifth* since Korra and is an Earth Bender who only was discovered to be the Avatar about a year or two before the show starts(his immediate predecessor died as an infant without being discovered at all, so everyone spent the last 20 years or so looking for a Water Bender), and well the world is basically a complete shithole at this point, so this Avatar has a ridiculously uphill battle if they want to achieve anything meaningful

*yes five Avatars in a 200 year period is a lot, basically Korra gets assassinated a couple years after the end of the show, and as for the four that are between her and the new one, well her immediate successor makes it to their 60's before dropping dead from a heart attack or stroke due to stress and poor diet, the next one makes it into their mid 80's but spends just under 60 of those in a coma, the next one dies in their early 30's fighting a war, and as mentioned the one immediately prior to the current Avatar died as an infant

Same reason the Earth general who tried weaponizing the Avatar state failed. The show repeatedly stuck to the grounds that violence begat violence and a murder-coup would just keep the cycle going, as with how Iroh explained why he couldn't just take his brother down and assume the throne.

...As far as the themes of the show are concerned, anyhow. Zuko just sticking a sword in his dad's face WOULD have objectively saved lives but they're trying to tell a story, not depict a 100% realistic outcome or "smart thing to do."

Not every villain needs to be a scarred little child inside. Ozai should have been developed more as he is pretty bland, but he doesn't have to be a tragic character. But you can just make him into a charismatic villain who embodies Sozin's Fire Nation philosophy not daddy issues. So just all about might makes right, he doesn't prefer Azula over Zuko because he projects onto her (or how comic books made it, because Ursa wished he wasn't his), but simply because he sees her as a more fitting heir. He wants to be the greatest Fire Lord, he wants his children to continue his line and he wants his nation to rule the world. The way he's presented in The Promise (despite how shitty the comic was otherwise) was pretty nice with that whole hawk and turtle (or whatever the animal was) story.

Ozai being Azula version -1 would be fine, good even, but he's not well characterised even to be that. Even if they made him a complete cipher who only appeared to be fought and defeated by Aang, but made it explicitly clear that he's just an older Azula in a string of Azulas, that would work. But he was just presented as generic evilbadman for Aang's big moral dilemma, it was one of the weakest points of the show in view of what it deserved as the climax.

She lost to Iroh aboard her ship, literally only was not dead because he’s a nice guy and didn’t redirect the lightning into her chest. Then she failed to catch the Avatar in Omashu and again after a lengthy chase. Then she lost the drill, an extremely expensive machine that took two years to build. Only after that did she succeed in conquering Ba Sing Se, but an even halfway objective assessment would not that it was almost entirely down to unique circumstances she had no way to predict or control and then pure luck on several occasions.

After that she succeeded pretty well on the DoBS, except Zuko reveals to Ozai that she flat-out lied to his face on an important matter of national security. Then she goes to the boiling rock and lets a bunch of prisoners escape, and her two closest mates turn traitor. Then she leads an attack on the southern air temple which fails to accomplish anything and almost dies in the process. After that she doesn’t show up again until the finale, whereupon she gets mouthy with the Fire Lord himself.

So yeah, Ozai was way more lenient with her than Zuko.

I don't see your logic. While concubines and their children did not have inherent legal status in order to give the Emperor more control over succession they obviously existed in abundance. They could obtain a fair amount of influence and likelihood to inherit based on the Emperor's favor. If a concubine was popular with the Emperor and their son made for an appealing choice for inheritance, it was a distinct possibility he could become Emperor via adoption or some other courtly hullaballoo.

Emperor Taisho, the great grandfather of the current Japanese Emperor and the father of Hirohito was born of such a situation. Empress Shoken was evidently barren and never had children, so they just lied and said that Taisho was the result of the union between Emperor and Empress, even though. That was only 100 years ago.

Zuko didn’t go home after any of his failure in the first season and Ozai still decided to throw him and prison and presumably gave Azula permission to go ahead and kill him if he resisted. But if you still doubt how much more lenient he was with Azula then just compare the results of Zuko speaking out of turn but not against him to Azula flat out contradicting and making demands of him in public. The most she got was a glare as opposed to a fireball in the eye.

Because both sons were still capable of producing more sons of their own. Iroh was Azulon's heir. And with Lu-ten gone, Ozai was Iroh's heir. Ozai was being a little piece of shit purely because with his nephew dead he wanted to up-jump his place in the line of succession and Azulon saw that clearly, so he needed to teach the little shit his place.

Of course Azulon didn't realize that Ozai saw his own children as expendable and having him kill Zuko would've done nothing in regards to his ambitions.

Both Iroh and Ozai were young enough to still get someone knocked up so the idea of everything falling onto Azula probably didn't seem likely to him.

He also probably didn't foresee Ursa giving Ozai a poison to kill him in a last ditch gambit to ensure her son wasn't beheaded.

He probably fully intended to let Iroh grieve a bit before telling him to knock up some big titty fire nation woman and pump out a few more kids.

Ozai's character is the first sentence, minus the second and plus just a little salt. It's not terribly complex.

It's usually people that don't understand Azula (ironically often her waifufags) that think Ozai is a non-character.

This. Avatar is full of characters who are JUST assholes. Azula flips her shit because she was thought "Do X and you'll get Y," and then she didn't get "Y". Azulon didn’t give a damn about Azula or find her particularly special, but definitely after that recital scene he did know that Ozai thought of her like a prized possession.
What if Azulon told Ozai to kill her as fair punishment for how he acted in the wake of Lu Tens death, to take something he valued away from him to “teach him respect”?
Ozai being a manipulative schemer would find these terms unacceptable but would come up with a way to turn the tables and eliminate Azulon instead to avoid this punishment. Maybe he knew he could use this premise as a way to manipulate Ursa into taking the fall for it but thought he’d have a better shot if he made her believe it was Zuko who was supposed to die instead. Ursa taking the blame for Azulons murder would kill two birds with one stone. He would have to have told Azula to lie to Ursa because Ursa wouldn’t kill Azulon for her but she would for Zuko. And azula would do it because she wants to save her own ass while also getting rid of Ursa too.
