Like maybe he cares on a superficial level what others think of him but mostly he just doesn't give a fuck and does what he likes and thinks he's the best for it. Perhaps it has something to do with Squawkencluck changing into a more prominent and competent character so there's less need for DM to act as a straight man, so he can indulge his ego as much as he likes for laughs which for me is more important in a comedy show.
That said, perhaps the one drawback in making him more silly in general is sometimes it lessens the impact of him being put in silly scenarios like in the Attack of the Clowns episode. With the original DM he had to stay above all the craziness around him and forcing him to stoop down and indulge in the madness at the cost of his dignity would've been hilarious, with reboot DM it's funny but not that out there for his character and he's done worse without caring what anyone thinks of him, so it doesn't hit as hard as it should. But other than that I think this change has worked pretty well and I don't know why people get so pissed off about it, it always sounds like impotent nostalgiafag rage over something merely being different instead of genuine criticism of how it doesn't work. Could also be Enterbots whining about "muh mean-spirited" humour because DM can be more of an asshole now and will say the things out loud that his older self would've kept to himself, who knows.
All I'm saying is they knew they couldn't catch lightning in a bottle twice so they did their own thing and I respect them for it.
