Now with Cates you get Dylan Brock and Knull, probably the worst things to ever happen to Venom. Eddie Brock doesn't even act like Eddie Brock anymore, he's some weird way for Donny Cates to deal with his daddy issues, the same way he does in every comic he writes. Eddie Brock was always a loser, an outcast, a loner, and a bit of a lunatic in an abusive relationship with an alien. He's not someone who should have a son and it's weird that giving him a son turns him into a very normal single father.
Then there's the way Donny Cates treats the symbiote itself, does it even have a personality anymore? What's it even doing? And now Eddie Brock is Captain Universe and he's going to save the day like that, without the symbiote, without being Venom. Idk, I feel like the people who like Donny's Venom just don't like Venom. It's Venom for people who hate Venom. Lee Price, as edgy as he was, was 100% Venom, he was a street level nobody with dubious morals that was randomly granted super powers. That's what Venom is. Not an Avenger or whatever.
