Anyway, I like him because when he's written well he represents everything one should strive for as a person. He's strong, sturdy, gentle, loving, kind, patient, forgiving, nonjudgmental, and just. All of my favorite Superman moments are fundamentally wholesome, and usually more about internal/philosophical struggle than physical.
Unfortunately he's a very old character with a LOT of writers, so there are stories that don;t reflect the ideal. Between that and people using his status as a paragon of good to shit on those they disagree with (think those "God Hates Gays" signs but with Superman), he's far from flawless as an icon.
