I think I've finally realized what's wrong with the ending of Bojack Horseman after probably 20 viewings of the series.

In the second to last episode, he's mid suicide attempt after his entire life implodes, and he calls Diane, the only person who hasn't ever betrayed him and always had his back, asking for help. Sure he's a bad person, but nobody is infallible. At that point he NEEDS HELP. The panic in his voice and how he phrases it makes it abundantly clear that he is TERRIFIED. That was not the actual voicemail he left, but it demonstrates the emotional state he was in.

In the last episode she goes off on Bojack, because he, a recovering drug addict, who had relapsed and was on the verge of suicide, and reached out begging for hell from the only person he could think of that might help him without the risk of getting further betrayed. In the previous episode, and he flatlines he asks her to stay on the line to comfort him as he dies.

She literally blew up on him because she resented that he asked her for help mid suicide attempt - and then bojack apologizes.

And the whole setup makes it feel like she was right to be angry at him for making his suicide attempt "her responsibility"

How fucking shitty is that?
