I also find the whole Puss in Boots scenario to be contrived : Harold needs Fiona to marry Charming, so does he do ? Hire an assasin to kill Shrek. First of all, how is this going to help ? How is killing Shrek going to make Fiona eventually marry Charming in the future ? Never explained. Afterwards, Puss makes an effort to kill Shrek in the woods, fails, and then joins him for no reason on a whim. It's incredibly forced, like they wanted to add a new sidekick to the team and didn't know how to do it. Lastly, the whole plot about Harold hiring an assasin to kill his son in law is completely abandoned in favor of the beauty potion plot. It's never referenced again. Harold never even bothers checking if Shrek was killed or not. It's all very sloppy storytelling. That entire middle section feels like it didn't have much thought put into it at all, yet the constant jokes, references and licensed songs are so distracting that you don't notice it in the first viewing.
