Jesus claimed to be God. This would be the ramblings of of a mad man were it not for the many witnesses of His miracles and resurrection. Jesus lived in a small community, where everyone knew everyone. The apostles regularly told doubters to ask around.
The first hand accounts of Jesus may be few by modern standards, but they are far more than we have for most accepted ancient figures, and that includes accounts of the fifty days after the cross.
