The settings and characters are just so cozy and often more grounded than I'd expect. It and the characters are capable of great depth and shallowness all the time.

>What are your favorites episodes and moments so far?
I loved the Twig episode and the David, Victoria, bellkeeper, Kaisa and Tilda episodes. Too many moments to count. I enjoyed the feeling of the Christmas episode but those are usually my favorite with animated shows.

>Favorite characters and/or creatures?
Nisse, fake Nisse, David, Bellkeeper, Hilda, Twig, Johanna, All elves, Raven, Kaisa, Mara and too many others. I really love the water spirits.

>What are your thoughts on S2?
I still liked the first season more but I also like this one. It'll grow on me with viewings.

>What are you thoughts on the newer additions like Bellkeeper, Erik, Gerda, the Librarian, etc?
I love each of them. I preferred comic Erik but if they were going to make him an antagonist they should have made him a lil more competent and threatening.

After stone forest I think Mountain will be pretty faithful for better or worse. I'm hoping the Mara return.

Thank you and agreed, I'd like to know more about when there used to be an army of bellkeepers given he seems to have the same badge/patch as safety patrol they must have been more than just maintaining bells. Wonder if you have to be a part of the bellmakers guild to be a bellkeeper. Benjamin and Alfrik are fitting names. Gonna headcanon them or something.

I could see that being a very real possibility after all I'm guessing they used to be the first to warn the city when trolls were spotted nearby. Bellkeeper seems to take pride in his work but not care for Erik to the point he's much more lenient. probably been around long enough to know when a troll is an actual thread(he managed to figure out the Word migration patterns after all.)

has a pretty cute artstyle but the writing is extremely wonky. one good & bad thing is that it doesn't try hard enough to fail hard enough.

it's ok. the pacing has improved and no longer feels like the episodes are longer than necessary, could be because most of S2 is original content.

I always find that interesting, since it’s been stated early on in S1 that woffs are incredibly unpredictable creatures, where even Hilda doesn’t know where they go.

That does seem to be the case, with them pushing more emphasis on merchandise and with Luke’s plan to continue working on the series even if comics ended on Mountain King. So it does make me hopeful that the IP can grow as long as people still enjoy it and the ratings for it are consistently good.

Didn't even notice word corrected oops.
It's a really good scene and shows Hilda being in awe or admiration of an authority figure after her less than stellar run ins. I'm certain he has a lot of depth that we just aren't seeing yet. Also makes you wonder how much they actually know about anything in their world since even the book on trolls seemed to be outdated and not 100% correct.

I have only watched about half of season 2 at this point, so I'll keep my list focused on Season 1.
Also yet to read the comics.
>Why do you like or dislike about the show?
It's a nice, comfy show with enough of an edge and sense of adenture that it is not boring. As a scandinavian, Hilda almost has a bit of a Moomin-esque feel to me. However, the show is a bit too soft and sweet at times, and doesn't really let eerie stuff linger effectively- using Moomin as a comparison again, that series could be much, much creepier than Hilda despite not necessarily starring creatures nearly as dangerous, even in the softest adaptations.

Favorite character is probably Alfur or the Wood Man. Favorite creature probably goes to the Marra(as far as you can call this show's Marra a creature) as I've always liked nightmare-related creatures(the Nicht Mart was among my favorite antagonists in Legend Quest, for example) and her portrayal here is one of closer takes to the one in my own country.

Season 1: The Nightmare Spirit(for reasons mentioned above), The House in the Woods and the Midnight Giant.

These are really good takes. If you read the comics you can really tell he was trying to emulate the Moomin comics but couldn't really do it and created the Hilda we're all used to. Would love to hear more about your thoughts on the show regarding it's scandinavian aesthetic and all that.

They’ll definitely explore Bellkeeper’s story and personality if the show gets renewed for more seasons, and that’s not to mention the movie and the tie in novels. That’s also an interesting point to bring up, since Erik and rest of Trolberg at large has little experience with actual creatures like trolls and dragons that weren’t entirely aggressive. Which does make Bellkeeper stand out more, since he’s probably of the only human characters who’s compassionate and empathetic about the trolls who reside near Trolberg.

I think there’s no chance that bellkeeper isn’t Hilda's dad, but I wonder how are they gonna address this in the show.
He doesn’t recognize her or Johanna apparently, so chances are Hilda was the result of a one-night stand. And that’s not something you can mention in kid’s shows.
Let’s hope they address it somewhat in the movie

He's also willing to bend or completely defy the rules if he thinks it's the right thing to do. He honestly feels very much like a mature albeit slightly jaded Hilda. Going so far as to throw stuff at trolls so the bell won't hurt them or helping with her schemes when coming across them. I wonder if he was at the central bell tower for work that day and watching over the automated bellringers or if he was going to sabotage it himself.

There's the possibility he never knew about Hilda at all and Johanna ran away to her dad's cabin after she broke up with him or something. That honestly seems so up Luke's alley it's ridiculous. I don't really think he's that much older than Johanna if at all. Lot men get grey in their 20s and beyond.

Hilda has a flavor that is weird to describe, because it feels both familiar and alien at the same time(not necessarily in a bad way).
The creatures, the nature and the setting feel scandinavian, but warped through a lense in a way- which is probably both the british writer and the more modern setting compared to other shows that feature scandinavian folklore(like pic related, which was co-produced by danes and canadians and is so scandinavian you can smell it).
The actual people in the show feel more british than scandinavian most of the time(not surprising, what with the cast being overwhelmingly british), except the librarian(who doesn't necessarily scream swedish in her behaviour or anything, but her accent is so unmistakable that I could pin her as swedish in two sentences).

Speaking of which, I really do recommend Troll Tales, it's a fun little show. Much more comedic in tone than Hilda, but it can have some dark or heartfelt moments at times.

That's interesting. I had wondered how a scandinavian person would see the aesthetic mixed with the massive amount of Luke's drastic britness. Now that I think of it almost any scandinavian folklore aimed cartoon or story is always set in a time further away.
What are your thoughts in how it portrays folklore? Like how different the Nisse are and other things(especially trolls.)

I wouldn't doubt it at all from the what(little) we've seen he doesn't really interact with others outside of work and even his living space is incredibly modest and scarce. He may have no family left or he may even be a black sheep or have done something to make him prefer solitude.
It'd be very grey which is why I think it's such a possibility. Luke writing on his own isn't actually that positive and the undertones in Hilda and his other comics is always a bit morose. With him going to the show full time the chance of him adding such a thing isn't impossible but still unlikely. He did say that. I wonder if maybe he changed his mind or if they'll set it up but never actually confirm it.

I hope it's the case but won't know till we know.

Again, I haven't seen the later parts of season 2, so I only have seen comments indicating the Trolls more complex thinking/society, but the most notable thing is probably their more bestial nature.
Trolls in Scandinavian folkore run the gamut from very malicious human-eaters(both clever and dumb) to benevolent and silly, but almost all of them are capable of speech.
The Nisse are actually somewhat close to their original selves(a gårdstomte/tomtenisse), helpful but curmudgeonly beings who would look over the farm and protect it, and would receive offerings off food. Obviously they do not have nowhere space, and the show's look is somewhat different(I suspect they might have veered away from the look in my earlier picture to avoid association with garden gnomes), but they do feel very familiar.
The most interestingly odd groups are the shows Vittra and Elves, both of which seem to be based on vättar/vittror(wights).
Vättar/Vittror are portrayed in many different ways, but usually they are small, humanlike creatures who wear clothes(like the elves in the show), and live underground, where they have their own tunnels and their own cattle(like the show Vittra). They are usually benign unless you build something on top of their tunnels- in which case they will ride their cattle through your house, wreaking havoc.
Tomtar/Nissar are often considered a type of vätte themselves(though they tend to be significantly bigger than the other kind).

That’s one of the things that make the Hilda series and books stand out, it’s incredible melancholic and grounded in tone despite the whimsical setting and characters. Some of the episodes like The Deerfox and first three episodes of S1 show off the morose tone quite beautifully. As for Bellkeeper being solitary for most of his life, I never really considered that before. He does seem to want to connect with someone that isn’t antagonistic or belittles him like with how Erik treats him. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they do somehow that aspect of Bellkeeper’s character in S3 or the movie.

In Johanna’s case, she probably never brings up Hilda’s pa or feel genuine sadness or bitterness whenever someone brings up the fact that she’s single, with the main example being from “The House in the Woods”.

I still prefer the comics over the show because of it. I had read them before finishing the show and they felt similar to the Moomin novels for me. The plot is simple and whimsical but there's a lot of depth in the emotion. I think that's one of my problems with the series is the huge disconnect I feel for most of the show when thinking about the feeling of the comics but in the end the comics feel starry and a lil cold and the show feels like seeing it from under a blanket by a fire. They work well.
Oh that makes sense. When talking about the other bellkeepers he looked happy. He may just be lonely and Hilda was the first person in awhile to start actively seeking him out. I do hope you're right and he plays a part in the movie.

If you ever read Lord of the Rings, these are fairly singular to Tolkiens Elves and Dwarves.
The folkloric elves are thus a bit confusing- the term has association both with that and later things, like small fairies with with butterfly wings, magical humans, and ghostlike human women. Some beings that are called elves are also called both troll or vättar.
The paperwork thing has nothing in common with Scandinavian elves.

The elves might also be based on the "små under jord"(the small under the ground), incredibly small beings that lived underground and could barely be seen even if you held one inbetween your fingers.
My suspicion, however, is that they might have been inspired by Astrid Lindgren's "Pysslingar"(a take on folkloric småfolk like vättar/vittror and others).
Lindgren might not be folkloric herself, but she was a big author during the 1900s.

Honestly though, they didn't even need to give her magic to get through the plotlines. Just have the Kraken speak English or have Wood Man's aquatic language-speaking skills be brought up again. They could have just cut all of the belltower wires instead of trying to find the right one. Frida solved most of the library book episode's through basic logic.

In the comics their relationship is more often than not pretty tense with Johanna loving Hilda dearly while not being able to enforce any boundary and Hilda having little to no regard to consequences if she feels she's doing what's right in her head. Great show fun season even if it was all over the place. I also Wish they did more with the head of safety patrol and and the witch commission felt just like rip off of the diamonds in Steven universe but still everything else was top kino.
My favorite episode was the fifty year night and honestly love the time traveling rules they set up.

Just one thing about that episode which amazes me about Hilda compare to other characters as how’s in similar circumstance.

If I remember correctly, gods don’t actually exist in Hilda’s world. Sure there’s ancient giants, elemental spirits and thunderbirds that may have influenced religion and how it functions in places like Trolberg, but I remember an interview where Luke stated that gods and goddesses are pretty much non-existent. I could be wrong with my assessment though, so take my post with a grain of salt.

I feel that's a lil strange on Luke's part, you can't have sentient (even that isn't necessary) beings of power exist without religion springing up around them like we have with people and animals. And yeah thanks, December has been a busy month for me as of late. I’ll try to crank out the deliveries if I have some spare time but for now, it’s best to be patient.

As for gods being in Hilda, I think Luke wanted to keep the setting a little more grounded in both tone and concept. He probably finds the idea of deities residing in an urban setting like Trolberg a bit too out there for his liking.

Dropped. Why does Netflix always fucking does this? I feel you, most the month has been taken with carving and finishing gifts and haven't been able to put time into making anything for fun(I plan on making Hilda's troll bookend) aside from doodles every now and again. I guess you’re right in that regard, though it’s already been hinted at with the ancient giants being the protectors of the Earth before they left and how the marras and spelle operate in S1. So it isn’t too much of a deal breaker for me. Hopefully they still keep it grounded despite the use of magic and space in the setting, as I’m worried they might go too far with the concepts being presented.

Long story. Short version:
People on the DC boards asked him questions about his Justice League of America comic. He was pretty frank about the problems (as he'd always been), but also talked about the good stuff.
Some jackasses on /co/ were bitching about him, blaming him for things that were out of his control, like the team lineup. Anons trying to defend him went and got all the posts of him explaining the bullshit he'd been forced to deal with, all the explanations for dropped plot threads and what looked like terrible pacing, all due to editorial. There was no need to copypaste any of the posts where he said nice things about his bosses and job.
Compiling every little negative thing he'd said for months and months and putting them all together without including any of the positives made what looked like a very long list of complaints that made DC editorial look like a bunch of incompetent jackasses (so... accurate).
Then some anon thought it'd be a hoot to post the list on other forums, blogs, sites, etc. And then Rich Johnston posted it on his "journalism" site. https://www.cbr.com/254216-2/
And then McDuffie got removed from JLA, and he ended up freshly-fired, exhausted, and unemployed right as his health nosedived.
I'm not saying /co/ killed him, but we definitely were a factor in his parade of stresses in that last year.

And on top the shit sundae off with a shit cherry, people to this day say it was an example of Johnson doing "good journalism." The dude just copypasted a list of things /co/ had already compiled.

I wouldn't even call what he did journalism. He just copypasted someone else's work and wrote "look what I found" as a lead-in, without bothering to check to see over how many months those things had been said, or what additional context there might've been (like how McDuffie made a point of listing good things alongside the bad). It was tabloid-level.

Nothing we saw really implied her going after David because it was easy was actually something the others would be laughing at, but Hilda hit her right in her pride.
