Rian considered having them for the Throne Room fight, but he decided that everyone in the room that wasn’t Rey and Ben had to die. Since Rian didn’t know exactly what Ben’s relationship with the KoR were, nor what emotions Ben would feel in a fight like that, he decided to replace the Knights of Ren with the Praetorian Guards.
Knowing what happens in RoS, I can easily say Rian out much more thought into the Knights of Ren than JJ ever did.>Snoke
An obvious placeholder for the Emperor, who at the end of the day was a tool for Luke to redeem Vader. The audience never gave a shit about Sheev even when he was frying Luke. We were always more invested in the emotional conflict between Luke and Vader. Killing Snoke makes room for the actually interesting conflict between Rey and the conflicted Supreme Leader Kylo Ren.>who Rey is
Making Rey’s parents nobodies who sold her for drinking money turns Rey’s entire ‘hopeful, everyone is secretly a good person’ worldview upside down, and forces her to actually grow and develop. Rey deludes herself with, “my parents were totes good people! Yeah, they abandoned me on a desert scrapper shithole, but they’ll be back! Eventually! I just need to hope enough and it’ll happen!”
Rey got nothing she wanted in the movie. She wanted Luke to be secretly plotting and planning? No, he’s just incredibly depressed and self-hating. She wants her parents to be good people, vindicating her delusions? Nope, they’re awful people. She wants to bring Kylo back? Somewhat, but it’ll take a lot more to actually do it than just hoping.
And this is all ignoring JJ’s infamous ‘mystery box’ reputation. Remember the Sphinx from Lost that people were convinced would be important eventually? That was JJ.
