What do you consider the standard shelf-life of a cartoon? I.e. how long it remains good.

I feel like somewhere between 6-9 years. I think South Park started going downhill in season 10, I think Family Guy started going downhill around seasons 7-10, I think Rick and Morty is going downhill now which is 7 years after it premiered, and I think The Simpsons started going downhill during Season 9 (though I enjoy the Scully years).

Sounds correct to me, South Park being in my opinion an exception since they changed from a "fart and booger" cartoon to political satire so it's like Spitting Images
Other cartoons like Spongebob and Simpsons shouldnt have lasted as long as it did

While classic South Park made toilet jokes, modern South Park makes about as many. It's just classic South Park was more focused on surrealist jokes and character gags while modern South Park is more focused on social commentary and story arcs.

OP, corporations are gonna keep milking a show until it stops making more money than their other shows on the same time slot.

I'm guessing Simpsons and South Park merch make up a sizable income for these companies and each show makes more money than the profit from their median currently-on-air show in the same time slot.

It’s just like television series. A pilot season is all about testing the waters. it might be good but generally is unpolished and studios will mold the writing in the direction that is best received. Seasons 2-4 are generally the better writing because the writing now has a direction to go in, the writers are fresh with ideas they want to explore, and audiences are not bored with the content coming out. Seasons 5-8 may see a general decline, but the allure and appeal to the series still exists so fans tend to ignore the decline in quality. 9+ is where writing usually hits a cliff and drops. This is usually caused by writers running out of creative ideas, so they will often resort to tropes done to death, or contractual disputes tend to happen in this stage of a series life and new writers being brought in have a different vision for a series which often results in shit writing.

Very rarely does a series last longer, and if they do it’s because the writing staff maintains its team like South Park, or the appeal is playing off current pop culture like Simpsons.

Both of these opens the discussion to another kind of “shelf life”. How long lasting a series maintains its quality after cancellation. Simpsons episodes that rely on pop culture are terrible to rewatch years later. Series that rely on self universe containment however like Spongebob tend to be good even decades beyond the cancellation.

Agreed, a lot of their jokes, like Simpsons, rely very heavily on current events/pop culture.

You can see this a lot in old television sitcoms and series, the quality diminishes very quickly upon rewatch. Cartoons have the benefit of more unique/diverse world building so their long term shelf life is easier, like TMNT and Duck Tales where it’s self contained and relies very little on current events.

A good comparison is Groening’s Futurama and Simpsons. Futurama will stand the test of time far better than Simpsons for future generations because much of (current) Simpsons relies on pop culture, guest stars, and current event politics to tell a joke. This happens somewhat in Futurama but the jokes are more confined to a self contained universe and political jokes are often made in historical context.

Early South Park was good at being self contained, especially 1-5 and most of 6 and 7. The show would gradually get more political but would have an occasional bit of its own world building and personality. The past few years of South Park rarely feel like its own world now. A lot of the characters have decayed from being characters to being straw characters. The other characters that haven't decayed were pushed aside.

This is generally right, except South Park has just gotten better the longer it's been on. The serialization, the more thematic layers, the way it focuses on political themes, it's all more interesting than season 1-3 "ha ha butt joke occasional preachy moral." They just get hate now because they alienated their conservative viewers

Not really. Oddly enough, I've been in conservative circles and they seem to surprisingly still like the show. That's besides the point though really. Modern South Park has this problem with running jokes into the ground. An entire season will consist of one dedicated gag like Lorde, PC culture, the elections, and corporations dealings with China. It's funny for the first few episodes but will drag afterwards. Not only that, if you don't like a way they are handling a topic or a gag, you will have to skip an entire season instead of a single episode. Beyond that, the show handled political and social themes well long before serialization like Cripple Fight, All About Mormons, Goobacks, Best Friends Forever, Trapped in the Closet, etc. They also did long stories like Coon and Friends and The Black Friday Trilogy and knew when to stop them. Seasons 1-3 are more than just "ha ha butt joke occasional preachy moral". They mainly focused on surrealist jokes and it was basically a complete 180 of the simpsons as an animated sitcom at the time. It had lack of morals, avoided being down to earth, and was way more mean spirited. The show didn't try to be anything deep, it was pure dumb fun.

Normalfags watch TV series forever. They never stop because it's some "routine" to them. Every tv fag I know is like this, they watch the same fucking series for 20 or 30 years straight and never even question whether the new episodes might be weaker than the earlier ones of if they are tired of it.

Depends on the series. Something that is episodic in nature and comedy focused should be like 4-6 seasons minimum.

Something more serious with a plot should last 4 seasons max. Maybe 5-6 if you got extra post-stories to tell.

Yeah, Germany too. Especially with daily soap shit boomers watch since the fucking 70s. And millennials with Conan and such which already has 1000 fucking episodes by now. It started airing here around the year 2000 and its status quo now is probably still the same as the one it had when I stopped watching it in 2002.

The early seasons did that as well (oh my God they killed Kenny) the only difference is that with modern South Park the repetition is apart of the joke rather than being a formula.

You're literally proving his point. There's nothing wrong with Trey and Matt wanting to evolve the show beyond it's crude beginning which got stale after the first season given how bad the second season was and by the time the third season ended they pretty much perfected that formula and wanted to move on they didn't want SP to be the show parental boards thought it was the "dumb fun" you call it and good on them because according to the chart the show's best episodes came later on.
