I've heard people here say that when making art that "You need Loomis".
How good are the Loomis art books at teaching how to draw?
I plan on drawing again next year and I want some advice on what kind of art books I should use to learn.

I have it. I'm not done reading it yet but with what I've read, it's basic stuff you could find off the internet like body proportions and perspective. How to draw the head and body, though it doesn't hold your hand on how to do some of these things. Other pages are mostly filler. Its a good read though, but I'd probably look for a different book.

They'll give you a decent basic introduction and put you on the right direction. I also recommend Keys to Drawing by Burt Dodson, helped me a lot when I started out.
But the only real thing that will help you is tons of practice. If you're just starting out you'll have trouble drawing a straight line. Find books, videos and tutorials on perspective, planes, outlines, shapes and forms, light and shadow and go through the grind.
The most important thing is to think about every stroke you're making. Be critical but not negative towards yourself. If something looks wrong, think about why it does and what you can do to fix it. Refer to your material if you have trouble understanding why.
And if you really want to get started, don't wait until next year or chinese new year or whatever other neat number. Start as soon as possible and commit.

Out of curiosity why not get a cheapo drawing tablet? Now a days you can get a good enough one under $50. Of course it won't be a screened drawing tablet but it's gotta be better than drawing with a mouse. I'm still not good at drawing with my tablet yet despite having it for awhile. But now that I've actually been using it consistently drawing on a mouse is a lot more work.

Its a great starting point. Particularly with drawing faces. If you get the basics of Loomis, you can really dive in.
The main fault is, you tend to suffer from same face and perfectly round heads for a bit.

Really, you need to take the basics of Loomis, then bend and stretch them into something unique.
Honestly the reason I recommend reading it, is that it is a massive confidence booster for a total amateur. If you've never drawn anything in your life, then that is how you start. Once you get Loomis, you will feel like you can do more, and you'll want to keep drawing.

Loomis is alright, but it depends on what you wanna do. If you wanna do comics and stuff you're much better off studying shapes and simplification and expressiveness. I made the mistake of going really hard on anatomy with stuff like Loomis and Hogarth and I ended up giving up drawing after reaching levels of frustration that nothing else in my life had ever caused.

After a few years off I came back and just started mimicking styles I enjoyed and I'm much better off now. Over time you'll incorporate stuff you like about their style into yours, but almost everything I draw now is constructed of tubes and circles and I'm happy with it.

Yes. Honestly, as I mentioned above, you're better off just aping a style that you enjoy. Once you have same basic ability and you still enjoy drawing, then you could start looking into some of these books to learn things you want to improve on.

I'm sure everybody is different though, but starting with book learning to draw almost made me quit drawing forever.

They're quite good actually. Fun With a Pencil can get you drawing satisfying cartoons pretty quickly, and Figure Drawing For All It's Worth is very useful when you're ready to learn proper anatomy. I also recommend Burne Hogarth's books.

You shouldn't start with any book, you should just draw and then go to literature when you have a desire to improve.

People who start learning to draw with books are just ngmi. Using books as a starting point to draw is done by people who don't actually like drawing, they just like the idea of drawing well. You should have a pretty good love of drawing going into it, not expecting to learn how to start from nothing and expect to get anywhere.

Some books contain comprehensive info that's hard to find elsewhere, like Guptill's Drawing with Pen and Ink, but for basic concepts there are plenty of online tutorials that can suffice.
I have tons of saved anatomy books but there is little in there that can't also be found watching bodybuilding youtube videos and seeing the muscles in action, and those videos are usually very high quality and even include anatomical overlays.

In the case of Keys to Drawing I disagree. It starts you off by introducing some of the most fundamental concepts of drawing, contours and hand-eye coordination, and uses exercises to help establish good drawing habits like observing your subjects instead of constantly staring at your paper and using plumb and level measuring to help with proportions.
It's pretty compact and gets straight to the point and will help you enormously if you're a newbie.

You need to be able to draw a simplified body/face before detailed anatomy knowledge will even benefit you in any way. Trying to learn anatomy first is like trying to memorize a dictionary before you learn the alphabet.

Also of note for being worthless and counterproductive for beginners, that grid bullshit. You're trying to build up a mental image of how the forms you are drawing tie into each other, that's what knowing how to draw is. Separating everything into contextless grids is the WORST POSSIBLE THING YOU COULD DO.

More than tutorials I recommend just copying for beginners
Copy the design of your favourite character,copy fanart that you like,try to twist it a little,then draw real life things,the objects that surround you,yourself...

Yeah, I agree. I took a couple art classes at a local CC when I was newer. Did some figure drawing, which I did enjoy, but I just enjoyed it because it forced me to start doing gesture, which was new to me. Most of the stuff the teacher said was stuff like that though and its utter bullshit.

They also like to say "don't copy other artists, you'll just copy their mistakes", which is a really stupid saying because chances are if you really like an artist's style, you probably like their mistakes as well, or don't care about them. I mean, a lot of the creators of the content that is talked about on this board, if you go back and look at their earliest scribbles, they weren't studying loomis or hogarth, that's for sure. Some of the younger creators, the ones who still have work up digitally, half of them were just mimicking their favorite cartoons.

Honestly one of the reasons I suggest beginners just mimic art they like is if they reach a point where they can reliably create something that makes them happy they are more likely to garner a real interest and passion on it. Once you are drawing for joy I think the desire to make improvements will develop and you'll go into some of these books thirstier. A lot of my opinions are anecdotal evidence, but I have spent a lot of time around other artists and I feel like jumping into some of those books without having that joy and passion already built they just end up frustrated and the process is joyless, which makes it less effective imo.

They're right though. You shouldn't just ape another artist's style 100%. If you like what they do, dissect it. Find out what it is about them that you like. If they have bad habits, try to cut those out or find out how you can improve upon them. And you should do this for all of the creators that you like, so you can make something that's unique to you.

People say simplify where they mean stylize.
Don't stylize without a solid foundation in anatomy or your construction will look weird.
Simplifying shapes as a foundation for more detailed work later on is a good drawing habit.

I have an unpopular opinion, which is that talent doesn't exist. Don't believe artists that say it doesn't, they have their head up their own asses. Talent might be a poor word though, maybe aptitude is better though.

The problem is that you don't have to be talented to still get pretty good at art. If you're using a lack of talent as a reason not to draw, you're just lazy. Think of talent like having high lung compacity for endurance sports, or reach for things like basketball. If you're short, or don't have michael phelp's lung capacity, that in know what means you can't learn to swim really well, or be a good basketball player. It just means you might not be the best.

As far as art aptitude goes, I think talent plays a roll in some people progressing really fast, but in the end of the day if you are just looking to make some fun comics or fanart that looks pretty good, literally anybody can get that good. If you fail its because you chose not to put in the work, not because of talent.

DOES exist, wow, fucked up my whole post in the first 5 seconds. Anyway, it does exist, but it doesn't really matter that much unless you only care about being in the top 1% of artists within 3 years of drawing.

Many artists will tell you that they've been drawing for their whole lives. It's not that they were born with an aptitude for drawing, It's just something they found fun and were never discouraged from doing.
Whenever someone tells me something like "Oh I still draw like when I was 5", they almost always stopped drawing consistently when they were 5.
Art is a skill that can be learned like anything else, it just requires work.

There is no exact science to drawing, but being able to draw a good circle and a straight line helps. But without method, like the Loomis method, you just wind up with a bean mouth cartoons you see on TV. While it is tempting to start without having anatomy, you will have better art if you have an understanding of anatomy and working it into your drawing practice. Grinding out anatomy is not fun unless you are into it, so its good to mix it up.
Just have some basic drawing workouts so you can confidently draw a smooth circle and un-crooked lines, sketch some stuff or reference something that interests you, but don't trace it.
If you want books to start reading, you can follow in order:
Keys to Drawing>Perspective Made Easy>Fun with a Pencil>Successful Drawing>Figure Drawing>Drawing Head and Hands>Creative Illustration
Most of these books can be found in the /ic/ sticky.
After that you can always look into Hamton, Huston, Vilpuu, Hogarth, Bammes, and Bridgeman.

Also note that actually "learning" art is different from actually doing it. You might see a really skilled 18 year old artist who says "I've been drawing since I was 5" and you will think to yourself "oh shit I need 13 years to catch up to their level." But they weren't necessarily learning new techniques quickly when they were a little kid, with an adult mind and a focus on improvement you can advance much more rapidly than a kid drawing Inuyasha fanart for fun.

This is definitely true! I often recommend what I call "directional practice". That being, not just drawing whatever you want from your head, but actively FOCUSING on doing exercise that is targeted towards improving your art. In that case, having a teacher or mentor helps a lot because they can point in the right direction.

When I decided I was going to get better at things I tended to just mix it. I usually do like 15 minutes of gesture when I sit down to warm up, then maybe refine one or two of them after I'm done and focus on the anatomy.

I'll move on and actually study something for 45 minutes to an hour or so and then go fuck off and draw furry tiddy's and what not. Some days I will focus on actually practicing longer, but as long as you are incorporating study in every drawing session you'll improve pretty damn fast.

You're better looking at real people and videos of anything but not reference the shit will kill your ability to draw and if you're trying to get a handle on anatomy, tracing will speed that up - as well as buying an anatomy book and just feeling your muscles and body as you move and look at it). The same "dangers" exist with tracing and reference and looking at the anatomy book is more important.

Copying the styles of other creators, especially if they're well-established, is a valid learning method. Classical instruction of drawing and painting are basically "copy these plates, draw these busts, repaint this work by this old master" and they are all effective.
The best advice is to not stick to any one method of learning and to broaden your sources, learning from wherever you can and developing as you go.

These books are more for inspiration than actual technique. You'll get a lot of ideas on how to construction and design your drawings but not really get to grips with the technical.

I found Loomis to be very good in that regard, but you'll want to loosen up once you've got his "statuesque" drawing style going. I actually found "Fun with a Pencil" to be a better starting point with Loomis, and it has a lot of fun outdated language in there.

A book I use more often is Figure Drawing For Artists by Steve Huston. It focuses much more on the gesture and balance. Believe it not most cartoonists break anatomy rules all the time, but gesture and balance are always super important and can sell even the abstracted forms as character.

You can draw in 30 days is the simplest book I've found, and the only one that really helped get me started. You learn how to draw by building from basic shapes. The first three chapters are drawing spheres, the next four chapters are cubes, etc.

Just try and remain calm and upbeat. This is why many artists do drugs or drink. Not that you should do either unless you can responsibly. But being upright and worried about mistakes as if you're drawing in pen isn't going to be conducive to making anything at all.

When you learn to giggle about bad drawings and marvel at good ones (for a day or two until you hate them) you'll improve much faster.

Unironically. Bob Ross is able to do his paintings in 30 minutes because they're mainly landscapes, and landscapes emphasize contrasting background with foreground. More than that there are hundreds of lessons made available for free because of his show. If you want to learn painting, specifically color theory and backgrounds, Bob Ross is the best place to start.

Angelo John Grados "Mastering the Craft of Painting", Jack Faragassos "The Students Guide to Painting", John F. Carlsons "Guide to Painting Landscapes" (This one is probably the best, but keep in mind it's mostly pure text, but worth it) and Harold Speeds "Oil Painting Techniques and Materials" (Which not as text heavy, is in black and white). Maybe also Robert Henri "The Art Spirit", it's pretty much like taking an art class and he gives you a lot of tips with colour palettes frequently.

Imagine you wanna make a video game someday, but you are starting from scratch. The book route is basically saying "I am going to learn to program from nothing". Do you know how many of those guys make it? Very few.

Aping another artists style and working it till you can move on is like making custom maps in the WCIII editor. Somebody else set the stage for you, you are just developing your passion and learning the basics.

Somebody who fucks around with the WCIII editor for a meaningful amount of time is going to be able to make a fun map to play, at least for them. Somebody fucking around with books isn't going to be having any fun and won't be making anything anybody cares about. The WCIII guy can move into real programming or take classes when he's ready. The guy that tried to learn coding from scratch gets disillusioned and quit before he made a single thing.

Of all the Loomis books, I actually think that fun with pencil might be the worst choice. It really is fun without developing and consistent fundaments like some of his other books.

Between the drawing books people will get confused by the drawing approach and won't commit to either fully and won't progress. You either stick with the observational method of drawing or the construction method (which can still vary from author to author).

I'd start with Jack Hamm personally.
Though before following any drawing book you need to get really good at drawing squares and ellipses in perspective so I'd reccomend to study technical drawings (not to draw with rulers but to train your free hand to emulate that quickly and develop some confidence with your lines)

The absolute fastest way I managed to start understanding 3d form in drawing is copying along line for line with a knowledgeable teacher who was doing a drawing demonstration. They drew a line, I'd attempt to draw that same line. It lets you understand better what their thought process and understanding of form is when they're looking at a human figure. Then I could take the process I learned from them to apply to figure drawings from photos I collected myself.

I used Vilppu and Steve Huston lectures to copy from. The book Force by Matesi is also very good.

Here's some (badly stitched) tips from Dave Rapoza, a guy who went from being a successful concept art guy to a successful comic artist. You might know him as the guy who did the Logan movie poster. His path was a bit unconventional in that he had much stronger painting skills than pure drawing skills when he started out, and went down the comic path partly because it would greatly strengthen his ability to draw in lineart.

Reading this right now. As a complete amateur, I love the perspective it approaches drawing with; not as a talent, but as a basic skill like reading and writing.

The same way you don't need to become a talented author to learn how to write decently or a genius critic to read properly, you don't have to be a grand artist in order to draw some basic ideas well enough.

This is true with general drawing too.
Most artists you like will probably have anatomy failures and you won't notice it because it's fine.
e.g. hands can only reach to the pelvis, stilts for legs, eye size, ribcage terminates too early, impossible or uncomfortable hand gestures, fingers with only two segments
And then if you like anime, all head and hair anatomy is thrown out the window.

That being said doodling and enjoying drawing isn't a bad thing and "improvement" is something that can ruin that. Sometimes doing things for fun and relaxation is perfectly fine - 50 year old tennis players certainly aren't learning kick serves they just want to enjoy themselves.

Seconding these tips, doing everything he says right now and it's all accurate. Like he says the hardest parts are getting the hours and sticking to them daily, but once you have them there's a literal day-by-day improvement (nothing enormous but things consistently look better and draw easier). It really is just discipline.

It’s a thousand times harder to draw heavily stylized characters than it is to draw more realistically.
Like I love the Robot Jones/Paul Coker Jr. art style but it’s super difficult to get right.

I think the best way to find a style besides letting one happen naturally, is to look at artists you like and examine what you specifically like about their style and try to interpret that into your own work.

There is a point where 'knowing the fundies' really well with pure observational drawing and polished rendering like figure drawing can potentially become a barrier. I'm talking about someone who goes to an atelier for figure drawing for like a year or so and really grinds away at those observational fundamentals with figure drawings and still lifes.
It might seem like I'm making it up but I've seen it happen to an extent and it's something a professional like Dave Rapoza has talked about on his livestreams a couple times. Let me see if I can articulate it.

Basically, the end goal of getting really good at observational drawing and polished rendering with figure drawing/landscape/still life, like very near master class, for an illustrator is to boost anything they do from imagination, right? But when someone does a lot of observational fundamentals and neglects the imaginative drawing part for some time, the latter will definitely not be caught up to the former in polish. It can become really disheartening to see yourself go from a really well rendered observational figure drawing to a crude imagination drawing after soooo much time was invested in improving. Some retreat back into observational drawings/paintings and just get stuck there. Not everyone tho, Karla Ortiz is one illustrator who went the atelier path but successfully used that experience to boost her imaginative work and moved on. There is a certain trade off that your style WILL conform to that 'atelier school look' unless you do more grinding to break out of it again.

This doesnt happen with classes or courses that are explicitly about drawing and inventing with the help of your imagination though.

Howard Pyle reccomended that after gaining some stable confidence in construction drawing, that someone should start a drawing with only imagination and carry it as far as they can. AFTER that first stage then all the references can be pulled up to fix up the drawing and fill in the gaps.

Consciously adding in stylistic elements is like changing how you write, it's clunky at first but practice is how you improve.

The cheapest way to practice tablet drawing is to draw on paper with a pencil.

Get the shittiest blank notebook you can to get used to doing a lot of sketching, which is inherently disposable. Sketches don't have to be a finished drawing.

It's much better than drawing with a mouse. The only way I could see that being really useful is if you want to "draw" vector images.

The biggest difference I noticed with drawing with a tablet is not looking down at what you're drawing. It's something that's a bit weird at first but after a while it's easier.

I can vouch for the tablet thing. I bought an XP-Pen tablet for $30. I'm a complete neophyte in drawing, and most likely won't ever pursue art in a serious fashion, but $30 is nothing for the option of being ABLE to do more. Heres something Ive been trying but idk if itd be helpful to others:
Before I start any sketch, even a casual doodle, I do a tiny thumbnail in the corner of what I want to draw before starting the full size drawing. I tried this because 99% of the time the first draft of something will be worse than the second. I have no idea if this is productive but I do feel like I have a bit more confidence if I do that little thumbnail first and I like the end results a bit better.

This is excellent advice. It helps one focus on what they want to draw so they can just draw and not spend the whole time erasing and replanning.

A thumbnail composition, a gesture or two on the side to figure out poses will allow for the focus to remain on rendering.

That other Anon is right. If you want to start drawing? Buy a pencil and paper. They cost like $2. Anyone can start. You can learn fundamentals of drawing with pencil and paper, and by following instructions, like DrawABox.com and Andrew Loomis. You DON'T need a scanner just for practice. Start of with physical drawings, and then build up to a tablet. And have the confidence to know that a tablet makes things much easier. Drawing is a fun hobby that more people should take up. It takes a lot of time to do, but I think ANYONE can reach an "acceptable cartoon" level with enough practice.

In short, practice and improve draftsmanship using a pencil. You can be a memelord and use a mouse if you really want to, but that still seems weird.

For me, I've found using a tablet to be easier than pen/paper. Even using a mouse COULD end up better if I could get a cooperative mouse (all the ones I have have weird "doesn't want to travel in one direction" kinds of issues). I have fairly severe ADHD, and one of the known symptoms is issues with coordination (along with REALLY shaky hands). What I hear is that the usual solution is to go to occupational therapy for the coordination issues. At least as my parents tell it, somebody "spontaneously" decided to drop me from therapy, and I've had to deal with said coordination issues since. That and being left-handed, I was born to smear graphite and ink on paper. With a tablet, I don't have any risk of smearing whatsoever. Being on a computer, it also means I can take advantage of layers and undo/redo. The computer/digital aspect of it fills in the cracks where my body ltself fights me.

Yeah, my biggest issue is that since I can draw really quickly I'm bad at taking my time to do things.

I think drawing digitally has actually helped me do that, since I can go over and adjust things more in-depth without much fuss. But I still have a big fear of overworking something, adding too much detail, and muddying the clarity of the end result.

They're also surprisingly well-supported. I got one before I swapped to Linux and, on a whim, plugged it in. It technically worked OOTB. I did have to make a simple script to set it for left-hand mode and to reduce the cursor coverage to one display, but getting the info was fairly easy.

If anyone wants a starting beginner book that's much shorter than Loomis and cuts straight to the point with no intros, look up "Simplified Drawing for Planning Animation" on libgen. It's very short so you won't lose much time flipping through it. Animators more than anyone else have to learn how to draw from imagination after practicing their fundamentals, so I find that animators tend to cut straight to the core of how to build that ability.

Most of the books discussed here are for figure drawing. They give you a few tips on shading but don't discuss it that much.

Look for things that litteraly don't work without shading, like clothes, nature or perspective. Or just grind drawabox, I think they have a shading module after they make you draw lines for 10 pages.

Theres an artist named Chris Hong on yt who uses watercolor with colored pencil. Im not really a fan outside of using them to lightly sketch (they feel nice to use on newsprint for that). To get the best color payoff even with high quality pencils you have to really press and get hand cramps. Markers or ink wash are much gentler

Drawing pencils come with a range of graphite that produce darker or lighter lines under the same amount of pressure, these are called grades. "Normal"/ no. 2 pencils are all one middle grade, HB, but they will not be able to produce the type of very dark or very light line you need for making a drawing with accurate values.
And before you mention crosshatching, it isn't always able to match the dark lines produced by something like a 4B or higher pencil and it can produce a weird look to your drawing.

Well, this book was made before computers. So pencils would be a very normal thing for all artists to have. Drawing with pencils isn't a wrong way to starts. Anon a lot of art instruction has you go and copy a master to get a feel for how they got their results.
There is nothing wrong with copying the work of a pro for a study, especially if their art is heavily stylized and you want to develop a similar style.
It only a problem if it's your sole source of study and you neglect everything else.

I'd say Loomis is not the one for you. You first need something about how to properly see and draw 3d forms in 2d. Drawabox is not bad just for the love of god don't really try to grind all 250 or whatever boxes.

Also always remember why you are learning to draw - it's best to spend an hour or two on learning new things and then spend as much time as you like drawing what you actually like trying to apply what you have learned.

things like that pic can be misleading - it looks simple at first but the type of shading there requires a good deal of skill/knowledge/experience to simplify in that manner that appears coherent and clean to us. I'd argue soft shading techniques are generally easier since small aberrations with the seemingly simpler harder style shading become way more apparent

Depends what you're trying to do. Loomis can be used for simple/cartoon stuff and realistic with more construction. Regardless, I think a good approach to always have to is to look through a number of options. That is to say, look at other instructors (there are names mentioned in this thread and it's pretty easy to find more). Another good habit to have is simply copy what you like. See what tricks they use. How they're doing certain things in certain ways. Copy from other people for easy appeal. If you're afraid of failing, it's merely a habit you need to get into. Things don't always work. You just gotta try again and deal with it.

Got in trouble many times in elementary school 'cause I would have much rather have been drawing something than doing my schoolwork, and none of my shitty K-12 schools had any art classes or teachers.

Tfw also when I had shitty parents that thought it was all bullshit. Never encouraged me and only sought to discourage and demoralize me. Calling it a useless or pathetic hobby. Not just art, but all my hobbies and liked activities. Even going so far as to throw away my supplies and god awful shit I drew and painted with them a few times.

It doesn't matter how much skill or talent someone may have, if the discouragement gets too high, the will and drive to keep at it and improve slowly fades away to the point where it doesn't even matter anymore.
If you're a parent, get involved with your kids hobbies and don't be a dick to them.

Loomis gives you a framework for learning the basics of realism and form drawing. He has his own style but doesn't really recommend you to copy it.

Loomis' are merely a middle step that focuses on the basics and penciling. You ain't getting anywhere just with loomis unless you wanna be a W4H or only d b&W realism.

Loomis' best book is Creative Illustration because it gives you handy info on how to make images stand out with purposeful value distribution, goes over composition, and has a helpful list of questions to ask yourself for storytelling in an illustration.

On purely the technicals like figure drawing he go on way longer than is really necessary and they're very dry. Going to echo the reccs for Vilppu (his video lecture series on figure drawing is probably floating around somewhere for free), Steve Huston, and Mattesi on gesture and figure drawing. They emphasize that while accuracy is nice, you also need to keep the LIFE in life drawing.

Ever heard of the Kirby method?

The best way to figure out anatomy and economy of lines is to draw like you are an assembly line worker. Draw say, 10 pages every day or maybe every week. never stop to check for mistakes. never stop to correct reconsider Never STOP.

Eventually you'll develop an understand of the economy of lines to let you find a balance between the most interesting forms and detail and an acceptable time frame. owed to the simple fact that you did over and over again and didn't waste time agonizing over every misstep. But it requires constant drawing and lots and lots of pencils.

some months up to a year of it should suffice to give you a really good handle of form.

Since you are doing a back 2 basics I'd suggest you to get a good handle of how the pencil itself works, best methods of shadowing, line depth, what paper you use, etc. Then start worrying about your lines.
