Sure he was a little headstrong, but experienced heroes like Billy outright said that he had what it took to make it as a hero. Furthermore, the world Finn lived in was very conductive for heroism and adventuring, with new enemies spawning left and right and big bads to constantly vanquish.
Finn, the human on his way to becoming a hero, was actively working towards a reasonable, if fantastical, goal of being a legendary hero, and if he stayed on the track he was on he would have made it.
