>>119054098I actually really liked how The Mask handled both the lesbian angle and the domestic abuse angle. It would have been easy for them to show Mad Dog as some consistently over-the-top asshole who constantly abused Bunny while he was onscreen, but after he yells at her for thinking about Kitty he calms down and tries to act sympathetic and caring, even though we as an audience know what a piece of shit he is. It was nice to round it out and show that the worst thing about abusers isn't that they abuse, it's that they aren't ALWAYS like that and gain your trust by treating you nicely and make you feel like YOU'RE the one who's in the wrong.
And the lesbian part, that was great because they didn't need to explicitly call attention to the fact that they were lesbians. They were friends who deeply cared about each other, but they didn't need to solidify it with an onscreen kiss, they were just happy to be free to be together again, and focus was never shifted off Courage's antics (the last thing they do in the episode is thank Courage for his help, and admit that not all "dogs" are bad).
