>>119004907The forbidden planet episode originates from the movie of the same name. One of the first forays into big screen scifi, Forbidden Planet is based off of William Shakespeare's the tempest in which the crew of a space ship land on an unkown world ruled by a man named morbius who has grown powerful off of alien technology on the planet, his daughter Altaira and their robot servant robby.
Many elements in the forbidden planet would become crucial in the development of sci-fi as a genre. Such as Robby the robot companion and the crew being what inspired star trek.
The simple premise of the film, a crew landing on a planet and facing an all powerful being, became a common trope in sci fi media. Serving as the plot of the aforementioned star trek pilot.
Dave Filoni's Star Wars; The Clone Wars, is television show taking place during the first chronological era of the star wars film series (in which jedi knight anakin skywalker, his padawan ashoka tano and his master obi wan kenobi battle the evil separatist forces). Filoni's Clone Wars sought to reinvent star wars some what by constantly pursuing new genres and inspirations for the space-western-fantasy universe to tackle.
One idea that hadn't been incorporated into the universe yet was the Forbidden Planet episode. The mortis arc subverts the common power in the star wars universe. Typically in universe Jedi are beyond the comprehension of common folk by using the magical force, mortis however is populated by three powerful beings who each fill the morbius role in the story. Each one powerful enough to make the jedi seem as weak and as insignificant as non jedi do to them. Much like forbidden planet's morbius, mortis' gods represent the Id, Ego and super ego respectively.
