He was initially going to be an Ultraman parody but his manga and subsequent show was somewhere between an affectionate parody and a deconstruction of Shonen comics in general.
It predicted shit like Pokemon and was also something of an indictment of problems with 'modern' Shonen Jump stuff where the hero makes no actual effort but wins through luck, having others do the work for them, they win Just Cause, etc. etc. It was very clever (though not exactly subtle) and was a clear inspiration for One Punch Man.
(Cute little fact, the manga gives a big shout-out to a Real-Life Japanese traditional opera singer. She was in fact *so* flattered by the joke, she actually sang the opening for the show when it was made.)
