The child-soldier who wants nothing to do with the fighting and just wants to run and be left alone, and the “charming pilot” who glorifies war are two character archetypes/concepts that are just destined to play off of and develop one another.
A big part of the Sequel Trilogy as a whole is traumatized/abused individuals moving past and healing from their trauma.

Finn didn’t need to still act as a Stormtrooper for information, but those deleted scenes in TLJ of his old squad recognizing him and congratulating him for his “promotion” and Phasma murdering them when Finn tells them what went down at Starkiller should have been kept.
