Agreed. While I do think Poe should have stayed dead (as he clearly was going to be from the trailers and original scripts), the Canto Bight subplot would have been much more engaging had it been Poe and Finn that went instead of Rose.
The child-soldier who wants nothing to do with the fighting and just wants to run and be left alone, and the “charming pilot” who glorifies war are two character archetypes/concepts that are just destined to play off of and develop one another.
A big part of the Sequel Trilogy as a whole is traumatized/abused individuals moving past and healing from their trauma.>Rey was abandoned and sold into slavery>Ben is tormented and gaslight by Snoke>Finn was kidnapped and tormented by Phasma
Poe holds absolutely no place in this recurring theme, and is why the only real thing about him was Oscar Issac’s charisma.
Finn didn’t need to still act as a Stormtrooper for information, but those deleted scenes in TLJ of his old squad recognizing him and congratulating him for his “promotion” and Phasma murdering them when Finn tells them what went down at Starkiller should have been kept.
