Off the top of my head, leading up to the plane incident, Peggy was *humiliated* when she entered a beauty pageant she was too old for, Hank accidentally revealed the truth behind one of their treasured romantic memories (where it turns out he got mono after a sexual assault,) Hank nearly blew up inside the Megalomart thanks to Buckley's sheer stupidity and disregard for safety, and for several seasons Cotton's been running amuck messing where her family because Hank's too passive to fight his old man.
I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting bad shit that happened--did the drug mule episode come before this? But the point is, for like two seasons she and Hank had been trying to have more children and when Cotton--who is pretty much the biggest source of frustration to her in her world-- parades around his pregnant wife who's the same age as *her* husband, she jumped.
The old Peggy died in that jump.
The Peggy that survived took it and physical therapy well clung to her ego in order to keep it together, that she was greater than all her failures.
