>>118250949The shows that air on the actual Disney Channel are the flagship projects of Disney TVA, the original properties they care about that get the biggest budgets and most promotion. Animators who have been pitching shows recently say that what they’re mainly developing at the moment are hybrid comedy shows (horror, fantasy, sci-fi etc.) targeting ages 11-14 (but also heavily winking towards an older auience of twenty-somethings), trying to recapture Gravity Falls’ success.
DuckTales once a spot there but faltered in the ratings and got banished to XD, which is now essentially their Nicktoons, a graveyard for reruns and traditional Saturday morning type action shows which is a demographic they’re weening themselves off of as without toy sales those types of shows are no longer profitable to produce.
D+ gets nothing but spin-offs and reboots as Disney sees it more like a brand extension and advertisement for products and the parks than a place to premiere exciting original content.
Essentially, the stuff you’re seeing now in TOH, Amphibia, and Molly McGee is the type of thing they’re actually prioritizing at the moment, and the rest is leftovers from previous strategies and regimes. What succeeds out of those high profile projects is what will actually determine their path forward.
