Now, 10 years ago I was leaving the anime fandom, so I really don't remember much of Japanese production.
But if you ask me about 90s and 00s it was really big and more mainstream than now.
Take into consideration this. Anime was way cheaper than American animation to TV stations to buy. World TV stations. So a lot of people grew up with that. Then about the 2000 the Japanese producers started to rise the price, so there was no reason to prefer one than the other, except for the quality.
Now, American producers are really influenced by Anime. So we got an improvement.
