I mean, this was published through Scholastic so lets not pretend that this isn't in part for children. Beyond that though I think there's a lot of room for interesting style choices in children's books. In retrospect a lot of my visual tastes can be traced in part to the picture books I read as a child, and that in turn that came from a diversity and richness of artistry.
The artists behind stuff for children might not be Moebius or Sienkiewicz, let alone genuine fine artists like Diebenkorn or Condo, but my a lot of my tastes in more serious forms of visual art were absolutely influenced by the picture books I read as a child, and we shouldn't shortchange future generations on that front.
