I often see this with my older friends that divorce. They think that after divorce their life will open up for opportunities and that they'll get to meet tons of people and have fun, but eventually they end up realizing they're too fucking old and tired to try anything new and strangers aren't exactly lining up to be their friends or dates. So they just... gravitate back to their old spouses who they never really stopped being friends to because they've known each other for decades and are an essential part of their lives despite the divorce. So they still hang-out and fuck for old times' sake and because there's not that many options for sex, but for some reason they're also too stubborn to get back together because they're still under the delusion that life is going to change somehow and they will definitely meet someone new eventually.
