It's still kind of stupid and nonsensical. Reading the issue, I thought it was Joker holding some random lookalike family hostage to live out his fantasy of having a happy home life, but then it's revealed to just be a total fabrication in the Joker's mind. So then why is the family under duress? Why are they acting afraid of the Joker if they're just a fantasy? Wouldn't the Joker imagine them as happy and loving?

Wouldn't the Joker holding a real family hostage be a more chilling and interesting way to illustrate the Joker's fantasy? What was the point in depicting it this way?

It's not. Moore's went on interview saying he didn't originally intend for the one panel to mean Joker's making it all up, he meant it as a wink and nod reference to the differing Golden Age origin. His dead wife's since been confirmed by other stories anyway.

I don't think the point was that the Joker was bullshitting. I think the ideas is that Joker himself doesn't know how he came to be. His insanity prevents him from remembering his past clearly. "Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another."

But it's important that in TKJ, in the Joker's memory of his own family, his wife loved him unconditionally and they had a real relationship. I find it odd that Joker's delusion now includes them being scared. Three Jokers is very obviously making a lot of connections with TKJ, so it's strange that the actual characterization of this Joker is so vastly different from Moore's Joker.

Johns recently did an interview on 3J about how he views Joker as the most inhumane, irredeemable character in DC. Ultimately 3J is a book about Jason, Barbara and Bruce with the 3 Jokers as mere plot devices. The scared family is there to erase the sad, sympathetic connotations they gave him in the original, because Geoff doesn't want the audience to pity the monster who shot Barbara even though that was part of what Moore wanted for him.
