Alt imageboards did this really well, especially cripplechan in it's early years, due to all the users collectively wanting the return of old imageboard culture and for it to thrive. 4chan and cripplechan in it's later years, gave up on this as users flooded in from reddit, twitter, and other undesirable sources. The site's users could only fight back these users with gore and other anti-cancer techniques for so long until they completely outnumbered them. In 4chan's case especially they actively banned users that protested and even made an anti racism rule, which is terrible because racism, ironic or not, drives away undesirable users. 2012-2014 was the tipping point at the latest for this site and 2016-2018 for cripplechan. Sure, some small parts of both websites were still fine, but it gets shittier by the day with cripplechan being effectively dead with zero activity outside of q cultists.
Good imageboards still exist but have much smaller userbases compared to 4chan and cripplechan in their prime. Mark my words, imageboards will rise again to their former glory with fun and oc for the eye to see.
