>>117570680Sales do matter. And not just comics, all merchandise. And the fact is, that people see it as agenda pushing simply because these characters haven't sold well. Sure, there are problems with the sells metrics of comics to do with popular characters and gimmicks, like you said. But the other metrics?
>THAT tells them what characters to use, or bring back into the mainstream. This is 100% of the issue!! Sales of comics, merchandise and other things is a good metric, regardless of some of the issues we all have with it. The problem with deciding "what characters to use and bring into the mainstream" is what they are viewing. Reddit and Twitter are not public polls that will instantly tell you what potential market characters have. Infact, they are often the opposite. Only like 10% of Twitter users are vocal and the idea that these opinions should form the basis of marketing decisions are the reason why we have had hugely divisive pop culture products.
I don't believe the agenda here is as bad as the culture warriors do. But I certainly think that what you're describing is a huge issue. By looking at positive feedback loops like Twitter and Reddit for cosplay or whatever, all they are doing are producing more divisive things. A subreddit is not the same as looking at a sales chart.
