Have Korra go to Zuko, as Aangs friend he should welcome all meetings with the Avatar, and have him give a brief rundown of how it spread.
Ozai supporters try to break him out fail and only get Azula. Azula teaches what used to be like 500 firebenders, only around 60 or so survive from the dangers of lightning bending.
Civil war almost breaks out. Team Avatar solves it. But since Aang doesn't kill many of the Azulas former disciples spread the knowledge.
This has Mako seen even by firebenders as untrustworthy, even though this is just too help pay bills, plus the antibender protest could make the first season actual interesting. Instead of dumb idiot love triangles and Amon is water bender! MUCH SURPRISE, SO GOOOOOD.
