Zack Snyder's 5-part story later on just re-uses a lot of those ideas. It had brainwashed Superman, Darkseid, Batman vs Superman, Knightmare hellscape, etc.
WB always kinda of wanted it to go a certain way. Like I wouldn't be surprised if John Stewart shows up in the Snyder Cut cameo because John is that old script.
