Inane questions/statements such as these are usually thought of by everyone at some point, but only (seriously) entertained by complete retards with no handle on suspension of disbelief. Shit like "Why would the Death Star have such a glaring design flaw?" or "Why doesn't Harry just shoot Voldemort with a glock?" are supposed to be dumb Robot Chicken jokes, not genuine plot lines fielded by the actual IP.

Of course everyone figures that a child would naturally develop PTSD after so much awful shit happened to them, I also figure that a fucking duck shouldn't survive a point-blank shotgun blast to the face but that sort of defeats the whole premise of the cartoon and my enjoyment of it. If you want me to start taking this shit seriously by considering the long term mental health consequences of fighting a giant acid-spitting centipede with a cat themed ice-cream sandwich themed mini fridge, we must also admit that the Crystal Gems (and Gem-kind as a whole) are irredeemable scumbag parasite monsters, Sadie is a felony kidnapper/coercive sex predator, Ronaldo is an attempted murderer, etc., etc., so on so forth.
Great, I'm glad SU Future found a way to drag the only good 1 and a half seasons of SU down to its level.

12 min episodes, man.

They set up SO many plot points like Steven consciously rejecting his fathers lifestyle and craving order, the OTHER Pink Pearl, gems like the Lapis twins unhappy about the dissolution of the Gempire and going rogue,Steven and the CGs fusions, Steven struggling to find a purpose, Jasper now respecting him and so on and so on till eternity with the whole PTSD thing on the top of the heap somewhere.

The show was just RIDICULOUSLY constrained by its format and by it gay ass cancer hiatuses and by the end they had no idea how to pace it in a satisfactory way. You just know that they had insane amounts of material, worked out for possibly several seasons up ahead but when they heard that the show is getting canceled they just wanted to blow all their remaining powder at once. I think less would have been more in this case. They should have just wrapped up a single storyline, because now for eternity this show will be known as the one that had so much potential. so much worldbuilding, so much possible stuff to explore only to end it with a mediocre fizzle.

What I found especially weird about all the mental health shit was that Steven basically concluded the show and got the absolute best outcome he could ever hope for so... what is there to really have PTSD about? Sure they TRIED to kill him a few times, but he had to make no sacrifices, gets to live as an immortal and invincible Jesus figure who lost nobody important to him sans the mother he literally never knew. He gets to live a life totally free of want and suffering, so they just had to make up some horrible mental trauma, when I've seen characters who get much worse fates and shit deal with it a lot better in works that aren't boring ass slice of life cartoons.

Probably because the show shifted in scope midway through season 1 and the original premise no longer lined up with their new vision. So then to address the glaring question of why Steven never went to school later on the writers desperately tried to rewrite the show's history and spin it as neglect.

Pearl tutors him, and I believe he at least reads. In the comic, Connie takes him to school for show-and-tell and the principal has the same concerns and threatens to call someone on Greg for not having Steven in school (also a gem monster destroyed part of the school). The only reason Connie doesn't get suspended/expelled is because her teacher comes in and tells the principal that both Connie and Steven got super high marks on a test she gave earlier (Steven only took the test on a whim). The principal figures that Steven is educated enough, but bans him from school grounds.

My point is that while these concepts are interesting and could potentially be executed well, you'd have your work cut out for you and ultimately end up writing a very different style of show.
If you bring in the Feds that are concerned with Gemshit, you now have to start writing some MiB/XCOM crap to explain what the fuck they've been doing all this time.
If you send Steven to school, you're now going have to write around that fact for every adventure and probably have some townshit tier "Steven interacts with his classmates" episodes. Notice how education for Connie has almost always been an excuse to write her out, no one gives a shit.

Don't ever try to pass the buck of the writers' shortcomings to the format and network. If OK KO! could have a satisfying ending despite being cancelled, there is no excuse they couldn't do the same with all the time they were given. It's not though, especially when it's just for the sake of "but what is King Elessar's tax policy?" pedantry rather than adding anything of value to the story or the characters. How are they going to deal with the U.S government trying to take Steven or dangerous Gem artifacts as a relevant, reoccurring threat? Beat up Agent Smiths? Provide a written letter from Washington saying they're above the law?

Even if there is value in the decision, what does it sacrifice in exchange? Being based in one obvious place like the Beach City/the Gem Temple would be tough to justify or taken out outright, you'd have to make them go underground or mobile. It would have been terrible for the show's focus. I mean it completely lost focus anyway but it wouldn't have helped.

It wasn't exactly satisfying, the finale was a series of asspulls, and the krew dealt with every remaining mystery and hanging plotline by turning them into a joke. This crap would never fly in a more serious show like Steven Universe.

Addressed in the comics. Normally they are non-canon, but the one dealing with school was written by Ian so it has a higher level of canonicity. Basically Steven went to school for a week after Connie brought him in for show and tell, he’s considered homeschooled but during his week of enrollment he discovered how poor his social skills with peers was and also how fucking smart Pearl’s homeschooling has made him.
>Steven nearly died a bunch of times and fought scary alien monsters, he should have severe PTSD and require extensive therapy!
Kids bounce back, and have feelings of invulnerability that fade. A lot of the time kids who go through traumatic events need to deal with it as teens or young adults because the gravity of it kind of collapses on them as their brain matures. Of course everyone deals with shit differently.

The crying is usually over someone and comes after a problem is solved and they are dealing with the emotional aftermath. If there was a problem at all.

For example he has a good cry after Nephrite was Poofed by Larimar/herself, but only after Larimar was defeated and there was no more danger.

The only real exceptions are when they’ve lost/are shaken from having almost lost. In several of those cases he actually was not the one crying, but came in for the save or they cried as a group.

In the context of the show, it was quite intimidating.

Previous episodes of Steven Universe just focused on fun goofy adventures about ice cream bars giving Steven powers or Steven's breakfast coming to life. This episode Steven presented a new kind of anomaly, for it was not only friendly, it was capable of speech. The mirror shared laughs with Steven, talked with him, and did not present itself as malevolent in any way. The mirror demonstrated nothing but fear over the idea of being revealed to the Crystal Gems, so when Steven presented this item's properties to them, they acted as if the entity was dangerous when it presented itself as otherwise. It didn't help that they didn't try to explain what it was to him, as if Steven would be too naive to understand.

The reason why Garnet's stare is considered "chilling" is because it immediately raised uncertainty to their moral alignment. Are the Crystal Gems evil? Is the mirror evil? We didn't know at this point, but it didn't stop Steven from slapping Garnet's visors away to reveal a less than pleased expression.

Its Steven making the first clear distinction between himself and Rose that isn’t based on either not knowing anything or human biology.

She was secretive and believed in security and pragmatism over honor or mercy. That’s how they act as well, following her example.
Steven marked a transition to the philosophy that its better to be potentially betrayed than to betray trust or deny pleas for clemency.

They’re less resistant to it with Peridot as a result of seeing what happened with Lapis, and after the initial animosity they even give her a chance. They react very positively to their rewarded trust after Peridot tries to save Earth before entirely rejecting Yellow’s authority. From that point on they balance their old decisions of security with the new emphasis on mercy. Its further reinforced with Bismuth, not only seeing the degree to which Rose’s old ideology extended but in Bismuth herself there was the furthest extreme of what that looked like; choosing to Shatter all opposition to secure lasting victories, which almost destroyed Steven without them even knowing about it.

It probably factored in heavily to why none of them thought any different of Steven after finding out Rose was Pink. Garnet+Ruby/Sapphire, Lapis, Peridot, Amethyst, Bismuth; all knew from personal experience that was as far divorced from Diamond ideology as he could be. Bismuth didn’t try to kill him again, Lapis wasn’t afraid, Peridot didn’t for a moment consider him a superior. Garnet and Amethyst didn’t reevaluate their relationship despite only knowing him due to being Rose’s successor.

So yeah. Probably the most important moment in the show in terms of narrative development. Steven decided who he was and what his values were, which affected every single important thing that came after.

People who had been raised in abusive household or have been through traumatic experience tend to downplay the severity of the circumstances and their messes up experiences.

Sometimes it really takes you a long time specially when you have lived your life on toxic environments, to recognize that what you have been true it’s not Ok and it actually has been harmful.

That’s why abuse victims or child’s who had been abused take such a long time to come forward, sometime or take you a long time to stop rationalizing what one has been through.

Many child’s don’t realize they had been abused or that they had been living on an abusive environment until long after the fact, when they finally have adquiere enough experience to realize that the things they grow up to weren’t normal nor healthy.

This even happens to war veterans, it’s not like a kid who didn’t grew up in the best environment it’s going to be completely ok as an adult because they initially they didn’t realize that the things they went through were Fucked up, these sort of experience hold repercussions and it was obvious that Steven always meant to deal with this topics in a serious manner

It's easy to re-contextualize the entire show (or almost any IP with underage kids doing dangerous shit) as PTSD inducing using the catch-22 of

In doing so, my own critical view changes to match the seriousness of these consequences. You don't need to try to convince me, my issue is that I am willing to do this in the first place.

Pearl nearly killing Steven with her insane space flight is forgivable to me, if I'm suspending disbelief to enjoy the show. I'm not sitting there questioning why Sugar has decided to portray this depraved madwoman in a positive light later on (whereas Kevin remains unforgivable), or why Greg the buffoon hasn't taken Steven and run. This is not the case if we treat the show on the whole as a systemic demonstration of child abuse. Now almost none of the characters are even remotely likable,and realistically deserve life in prison over the reoccurring theme of Steven's quick forgiveness (which becomes grossly twisted under this new light, like he is only doing it to mollify his abusers).

Have you watched shows like Moral orel, It’s always sunny on Philadelphia or Bojack Horseman for a more mainstream media?

All of their character and I can safely can say all of them aren’t what we would consider nor describe as good people, they are in fact very, very Very awful yet they still are compelling and enjoyable to watch or at least they are to me.

I think this is where we diverge, it’s true that Steven’s characters and storyline and narrative can be problematic or at least less than conventional and not A very traditional Hero journey as we are used to, even the narrative and arcs are super weird with the pacing, I recognize and acknowledge that yet I still find the show very enjoyable due how experimental it could very and how many unconventional topics for a kid’s show they tried to tackle and I genuinely appreciate the snow for what it is, that s all.

It also shown that Steven and Greg relationship was strained, that’s why he left beach city even after being on a better place than before, there are still things I wish we could have seen like more stuff with Jasper and what happened to Greg parents but the point of the epilogue is that Steven doesn’t need to heal/fix anyone but himself, after everything that happened and all the mental strain put onto him leaving was the best ending

I get there are degrees of severity but come on, shit show parents who force their kids to act like adults is at least a variety of neglect.
Beyond emotional issues/baggage, you're also putting aside all the reckless endangerment situations which are being used as ammunition by other anons to also justify how SU Future "adds up" (probably coinciding with a much harsher take on the CGs).

Feels like a case of wanting your cake and eating it too. Steven gets PTSD from his childhood, but the Crystal Gems weren't abusers they just had "emotional problems". Yeah, and dad gets emotional problems when he drinks too much.

A lot of people think that Steven left due to hating his old life, and maybe in some ways, he was sad there, but the main thing was change, he wanted to grow in other places and see them, explore new territory which couldn’t really be done in the place he has always lives. Fun subtext time!

Frybo was a Shattered Gem fragment the Crystal Gems used to act as soldiers during the war when the Crystal Gems were losing. This is around the time right before Pink faked her death, and would have been after Bismuth was bubbled. Bismuth made all the gear of the Crystal Gems.

Pearl implied she didn’t know the Shards had consciousness, referring to them more as glitchy than malicious.

Pearl called the armor in Rose’s armory the “Armor Of The Fallen”. We also know the Strawberry Fields was the site of the worst battle in the war, one so bad that despite being obsessed with glorious battle and into the idea of heroic sacrifice in Rose’s name she still has a portion of her mind dedicated to weeping during the aftermath. She also expressed phenomenal joy at Bismuth surviving the war.

SO

Crystal Gems start losing and Bismuth starts worrying more about losing those she cares for. Mix that with her bloodlust and she creates the Breaking Point, causing Rose to Bubble her. The loss of Bismuth turned the tides against the Crystal Gems, resulting in the Strawberry Fields. Pearl is mourning Bismuth along with everyone else. Rose tried to use the Shards to animate the armor of said Gems, but it is uncontrollable so they stop.

Bismuth accidentally caused the Shattering of her friends, and their remains were used to animate the armor she made them. Rose know how to use Shards as a power source and weapon because she would have been privy to the creation of the Cluster.

Kind of. They did describe the comics as secondary, saying they did happen but not necessarily in the way that they are in the comic.

The key difference is Ian wrote the school comic. As the second lore master after Rebecca, that makes it canon. His Twitter is cited as a legit source for continuity after all.

Really the main problem is that Peridot being asexual and fusion being analogous to all kinds of relationships are two mutually exclusive positions. If fusion can be any relationship, then there's no evidence for Peridot being asexual and it's just a completely made up trait. If not fusing is evidence of asexuality, then fusion by default is a sexual/romantic experience.
Rebecca tried to have it both ways, but these are two mutually exclusive stances.

Maybe I am retarded then, I thought the PTSD thing just kind of felt weird, like nothing Steven went through seemed that traumatic to him at the time and he seemed mentally ok throughout the series and was usually the moral cornerstone for any situation he was in, but later on he got PTSD from it? I remember a thread a while back where a bunch of anons really analyzed Steven's issues, and the conclusion they came to was that his symptoms point more towards suffering from Borderline personality disorder than PTSD. He really does line up more with that than ptsd, and borderline can also be caused by traumatic events.

If there isn’t a history of parents suing over shit, they wouldn’t do as much. If the boy and his parents accepted it as an accident she might only get detention or even just a reprimand.

I was born in 89, in elementary school me and some friends went overboard on playing around and were basically legitimately fighting. Since we all agreed it was fine we never even were told not to do it on school grounds. In high school me and a bully got into a fistfight that he started, they suspended us both for it just to be safe and pretty much told my very outraged parents it was because if they chose to sue they’d have a weaker case.

That's kinda my point. You don't have to do anything wrong, but you'll still be suspended if you're involved in a fight. Stuff like that is why I just can't see Connie breaking a kids arm and then there's just no mention of punishment of any kind. We don't even know if her parents know.

If the boy and his parents believed it was an accident then no further action might be taken, especially if they were worried Connie’s parents would sue over a suspension.

It was Jefferson, it was private but it was super weird the director ended up making the school Christian and they made us pray every morning at 7 am, none of that was allowed schools have no business with religion nor with indoctrination, When my family discovered what they were doing they ended up moving to another school

There's a lot more research done on male autism, ptsd, depression, aspd, etc., to the point diagnosing females with the same conditions has been difficult. Some mental disorders just manifest differently in different sexes, making it harder to tell between other conditions

I really like the idea of a character retaining their unintimidating and younger form despite their intellect and capabilities. I'm actually working on a SU OC that borrows a bit from that idea, though he probably won't be as young as little Steven here. More like a teenager so he's still physically capable, but still would make someone do a double take as they realize "wait my boss is a child".

I sat through a few episodes of the Steven Universe cartoon series back when it first launched out of curiosity. I was glad I downloaded a few episodes to see it, rather than have a cable tv subscription. It helped give me perspective on why people were unplugging from cable tv because I saw only a handful of episodes and could only think to myself that the Jewish are fucking weird people.

Connie is okay. I honestly didn't care for Connverse just because i felt it was bland, but i appreciated it more after Future. I was so sure they were going do a whole thing where they break up after his proposal, then that furthers his breakdown, and to subvert expectations he doesn't end up with anyone at the end, but i was pleasantly surprised with how they handled it.
The cute fanart helps a lot too
