The relationships and the cast grew beyond just friends hanging out. Definitely in the '90s when most of them grew out of their younger roles. The comics were pushing it with things like the Titans being mentors or the big team-up against Dr. Light. But this is what I meant by it being destroyed by death and dysfunction - they started wiping out the deep bench, intentionally portraying the group as hopelessly dysfunctional (in 52 and OYL), not knowing what to do with many of the characters, constantly shaking up the roster. That's a lot more than many other characters get, even with the, what, 5 year hiatus? And that's after having a series run from 2006 to 2011, another one from 1999 to 2006.
