>>116926998At&t purchased WarnerMedia, which owns DC Entertainment last year. Last week the new CEO issued a statement about restructuring and the news hit that many execs of HBO were made redundant along with 800 or so personnel. Then the other shoe dropped and top editorial at DC was also canned, Bob Harras, Brian Cunningham, Mark Doyle, Andy Khouri among many others throughout the company in what was described as a "bloodbath". Departments are being downsized and folded into others. Michelle Wells, who headed DC Inc & Zoom, the line of YA ogns, was promoted, as was Marie Javins, who is an old school editor and suit.
Basically, At&t wants to focus on HBOMax and the revenue generation of a streaming giant. DC Comics properties will exist as revenue generation for other more profitable forms of media. The speculation is that serial single issue comics will go digital only, special OGN's aimed at the bookstore market (think Raina Telgemeier & Mariko Tamaki) will be given priority for physical printings. Collections of old material will slow way down.
Further speculation is that comic shops won't be able to survive without the market share of DC's weekly product and the ripple effect of this move could finally kill specialty shops, and thus negatively impact every other publisher as well.
