I am sick and tired of being harassed by retards saying Korra isn't good and I know I am not alone.

This has been a weird week of coincidences for me, I had started binge watching ATLA last week, discovered there were making another live action attempt a couple days back, and finish the binge watch today only to find new of creators backing out of the new live action an hour later.

Now I find out there also going to be posting korra for streaming later this week as well.

That said, what was people gripe about Korra? Was it the Star Wars Debacle where it couldn't live to people's expectations?

Korra herself is not a bland character made to appeal to everybody, and because of that some people don't like her.
The story also makes some very difficult decisions that fuck over a bunch of beloved characters so you can picture the wrath it causes on part of the fandom.

Completely uninspired, and have no goal of their own. They just follow the avatar for no particular reason, to the point it's even difficult to call some of them 'characters'. It's very clear that they were out of ideas as to why these people would be following the Avatar; except for Tenzin and his family, they know her for less than 6 months, and she was an asshole to half of them. Still, these people leave their jobs behind to help her, never having opinions of their own.

Except for S02 (which is bad), it's okay at best. Fighting scenes use less of the scenario than in ATLA, and bending is basically throwing punches now. I would call it competent, if not for what they did with Airbending. In LoK, it became extremely inconsistent, because they needed to show all of those new airbenders causing trouble. But then you find some weird stuff, like people bending with almost no movement. It just didn't feel right.

That's actually a good part of LoK, but they could use more. It feels lacking in some scenes, which is weird considering they had actual competent people doing this.

Kind of. I'm watching LOK for the first time since it aired after doing ATLA again. I'm enjoying it. On Book 3 now. Some people claim there's too much fan service, some people claim there's not enough. Korra lising her connection to her past lives rustled A LOT of jimmies at the time. Korra and Asami ending up together rustled even more. That one I don't get. I mean, sporty tomboy who turns out to be a baby lez is almost a cliche at this point, right?

There were certain aspects of the show I genuinely loved. The Red Lotus were great villains, a good amount of the action scenes were well thought out, and it did have a good sense of humor most of the time.
It’s just that Bryke can’t really write a long term story. They’re great at world building but they need someone else to help write around that, which is what happened with ATLA. At the end of the day Korra can’t even compare to its original series, but it can stand on its own even with its many flaws.
SuYin sucks though. A genuinely awful character.

Korra was a constant struggle of being very good or very shit. For all it's quality animation and choreography. It's generic ham fist writing trying to touch on important subject matter is drowned out by the incompetency of it's staff members. Literally the only hype during the finale were the yurifags and their ship cancer. That is literally all I remember about this show on /co/. I remember being excited and than thoroughly disappointed.

Problem with LoK is that every book is written as the last, so they have to tweak characterisation between them, devil and deus ex machina and whats-hers-name being nothing more than mcgufin dispenser until they shipped her with Korra. And they didn't even had any chemistry besides her standing near wheelchair bound Korra. That's one step away from "btw he married a man" ending Shiro got. They should have at least dedicated some screentime to them interacting or something. Maybe they could have used limited animation and replace recap episode.

It's a bad show. The characters are cardboard cutouts with shallow personalities and barely any development or fleshing out - and any development they do get is almost invariably reset. The plot flails this way and that seeking an emotional response because it was written in segments without any forethought or planning beyond S1; half of the character decisions past this point feel like constant damage control. The mythology is completely shat upon by the reveals in the show. The characters act nonsensically to further the plot, and they are never actually given interactions that make their friendships seem earned. The villains are all extremely poorly handled, often undercut by last-minute reveals or stupid contrivances.

There are some misinterpretations of certain events, though much of it is accurate.
For instance, Korra didn't get the avatar state because she aang took pity on her, she got it because she was finally opening up to the spiritual aspect since she lost her powers.
It wasn't really explicit, like she didn't actually travel to the spiritual realm, but her ability to accept change only occurred when she lost her bending because she had built her entire identity around being the avatar (and thus she was able to gain airbending and come into contact with her past lives)
She's a shitty person but that particular bit of character development was pretty explicit

The structural issues with LoK are pretty hefty. It rushes absolutely everything and never seems to ever really decide where it wants its characters to end up or what to do with them, and it has a bad habit of just handing out unearned emotional payoffs that ring hollow because not only have none of the characters really been fleshed out enough, but none of their actions have made sense, nor have the events leading up to the payoff even really been all that related to them. Probably the one episode of Korra that really lands is the finale of Book 3, and this is why people were hopeful coming into Book 4, but it gradually became clear that the show was determined to mishandle its aftermath. It's really very apparent that the storytelling was done by the seat of the writers' pants, because the second season was a complete wreck, and after that it was clear that the team were sort of just scrabbling to fix the mess they'd made.

Unfortunately, that piece of development doesn't stick with her, so it's meaningless. I actually like the idea of Korra accessing the Avatar State at her lowest point, but, like everything in the show, the execution was horribly rushed. Maybe if the creatives knew they'd have more time to explore her actually reaching rock bottom, struggling with her loss of identity, and then finally accessing airbending, it would have been better.

IMO lionturtle should have been handled better, but this doesn't at all undercut any of the presence or characterization on any of the villains. This isn't comparable to Amon just turning out to be a fake dude in it for power and this somehow defusing the entire Equalist movement, or Zaheer's ideals exploding instantly in order to neatly remove any moral ambiguity. Or the whole mess of Unalaq.

I think his point was that Aang sought out another solution and decided to go through a dangerous process in order to keep to his ideals, whereas Korra tends to just have a tantrum and have something else conveniently solve the problem. The finale with Kuvira is the only one where she has any significant agency, and while she shows a single moment of growth here, it's undercut by how she consistently turns around on all other such moments throughout the series. It's hard to believe that this is her great moment of growth when, all through the rest of the show, whenever she has a moment like this she seems to completely forget about it barely an episode later.

So, they barely develop. Absolutely nothing of that is development or an unique character conception. Zuko is the one and only exception in the entire show, and exceptions don't make the rule.

First off, what does that have to do with damage control? The syndicated format of ATLA had them responding to mini-conflicts of towns/cities, not fixing problems they made (i.e. what damage control actually is). Plus, bloodbending can only be done during a full moon. That is a heavy nerf, and before you say "Yakone, Tarrlok and Noatak can do it without it.", 3 people in all of existence and their secret on how to do it died with them.

I don't get why you guys can't just admit that Legend of Korra had some major writing problems. It's not like it means the show is irredeemable, and nothing keeps you from enjoying whatever parts of it you actually liked.
I thought the villains of season 3 were phenomenal, and while I found the "spirit juice being harnessed to shoot lasers' idea in season 4 retarded, Kuvira was also a really interesting villain and making Bolin one of her simps was a more nuanced approach than most creators would take with a fascist villain.
I'm juuuuust saying, if you can accept the reasons why Korra is flawed and why it disappointed so many people, you should be able to brush off the derision and harassment a lot easier.

Stop making things up, pretty much every LOK fan agrees that it needed longer resolutions such as giving the Equalists movement proper closure after Amon fell instead of immediately throwing us into a civil war plot.

Yin and Yang aren't good and evil you utter retard. Ying an Yang are passive and active, dark and bright, etc. They have no moral component like Raava and Vaatu do, and they and interdependent in order for harmony to be achieved - which is not the case with Raava and Vaatu, because the world is balanced when Raava is in total control, and Vaatu simply destroys everything. He's easy to insert into Kuvira's army because he's a blank slate: every season the writers can just choose a new gimmick for him. Sokka on the other hand has consistent motivations and character nuance that remains solid until his arc is concluded at the end of the show.

No it doesn't. He's the spirit of destruction and ruin, functionally. He does not balance the world in tandem with Raava, he just destroys it. Raava when dominant has a balanced and stable world where things can change and harmony is upheld, Vaatu when dominant simply destroys. This is NOT the Yin and Yang system. For it to be Yin and Yang, Raava and Vaatu would have to be equal in power for there to be harmony in the world, but because the show needed a villain, Vaatu's role is solely of a breaker of things. The fact that some spirits like him doesn't fix this fundamental mistake.

In fact, even after the season declares that the status quo isn't perfect at the end, fixing it still doesn't involve cooperating or acknowledging Vaatu in any way. Vaatu has to be decisively defeated and sealed away for longer than ever in order for Korra to make things right by opening the spirit portals.

The writers may have wanted to write Yin/Yang here, but they failed. Functionally they wrote Ahura Mazda and Ahriman.

Before Raava and Vaatu, the Avatar was the World Spirit incarnated as a human. It can bend all four elements because these are the integral substances of the world, plus 'energy', which is something esoteric and forgotten even to the Avatar after so many mortal lives. This is a far more elegant system than the Raava/Vaatu one and did not need to be retconned into a convoluted story about a guy who can for some reason shift between elements when a light spirit phases through him who also inexplicably becomes bound to said spirit. The Wan story is messy and full of holes and introduces a completely unfitting element into the mythos. It's bad.

Great animation, though.

Actually no. Expansion/retraction are part of Yin/Yang. Construction and destruction don't fit into the dichotomy because they don't fit into the active/passive dualism that makes up the core component of the system. Additionally, even if you were right about that, you'd STILL be wrong, because harmony and balance are still achieved in the show by giving total power over to Raava. Meaning that balance does not require them working tandem, as with Yin/Yang, but instead requires that Raava subjugate Vaatu's destructiveness.

Well, this actually depends on the tradition. There are some where Order is Yang and Chaos is Yin, but yeah, most schools of thought make 'chaos' or 'things out of order' to be an imbalance. That said, the simplified neo-confucianism rampant in China at the moment does actually do the order/chaos thing, even if it's not that well accepted.

Different guy, but I'd say that the gap between book 3 and book 4 and the aftermath of that is the sole progression she has. Korra has a lot of instances where she seems to come to an epiphany and learn something, but she goes back to acting as though she hasn't learned this almost immediately after. She supposedly learns to deal with change in book 1, then spends the rest of the show unable to deal with change. She supposedly learns to connect with her spiritual self and moderate her actions in book 2, but then she spends the rest of the show being about as spiritual as a rock and being about as impulsive and reckless as ever.

Book 4 is the only part of the story where the writers seem to know what they're doing with her, perhaps because the end of the last season gave much clearer direction, and allowed them to take apart her character before rebuilding it. Korra has explicitly regressed by the start of book 4 and from there they could work forward with her. The sad thing is, it's all very rushed and surrounded by superfluous plot points, underdeveloped/pointless characters, etc. Her final moment of mercy toward Kuvira is supposed to be a big thing, but it rings sort of hollow, because 1. Korra hasn't really been a bloodthirsty kill em all character anyway, and 2. we've seen how she almost always just flips around and forgets her own character development, so it's hard to accept that whatever this change is, it will stick.

It's also a shame that, for a character people parade as a figure of empowerment, Korra honestly has so little agency. She almost never really solves things herself, and in fact she's rarely ever even in a position to make those choices at all. She gets knocked out, locked into Avatar State, chi-blocked, etc, so often that she seems like a spectator in her own show, and often this is at crucial moments where the protagonist SHOULD be stepping up - but instead we get some kind of outside actor coming in to save the day.

This is just telling rather than showing, though. We get a character telling us how much she's changed, but there's no actual shift in her character, and all we the audience see is her having a bit of a cry and then being handed her powers back. This is particularly ineffective because of the way the entire book has handled her character: up until this point Korra has been a passive character who whines, moans, throws tantrums, and gives up. She is almost entirely without agency for the second half of the book and she doesn't even get to really defeat Amon by her own merit. The result is a sense that she has not grown and not progressed, and then is simply handed a reward.

The idea that you are open to the greatest change at your lowest point is good, but if either the writers needed to give her a fair bit more agency or they needed to dwell on what that lowest point looks like. We should have SEEN her change, seen her find her center and pull herself up from that lowest point, rather than just being told, essentially, that being very sad gave her what she wanted. This may have taken far more time than the first book allowed, but, frankly... they should have planned shit out better if they wanted to use that sort of thing as a plot point.

It's particularly galling because in the second book she appears to have learned nothing from this experience.

With ATLA, you'd at least know from the very start how the story will end and where most of the characters will end up (basically mastering the 4 elements and defeat the fire lord). With Korra, there's no exact destination set for her aside from the initial training but after that's done then what?

Korra is great and most of the hate is just autistic nitpicking and damage control. Overall, it's one step down from Avatar, but season 3 in particular is fucking kino.
