I hope he's just exaggerating. Then again I thought the timeline didn't make sense because I thought Diane Nelson left in 2017, but then it turned out no, she was announced as no longer being DC Entertainment President in June 2018.

The news about Bendis signing a deal with DC was in November 2017, so I guess he may be on to to something. I wonder which other DC execs were protesting the golden contract deal that she wanted to give Bendis?

Sure, the rainbow lanterns are a silly idea, but comics were founded on silly ideas. There exists a threshold for these types of things. A vague limit to the suspension of disbelief. The spectrum of light, ROYGBIV, as flawed as it may be, worked for the narrative needed to be told for the story. But within that narrative, Geoff Johns created a set of parameters and he adhered to them. And those parameters worked fine ever since. Until Snyder and Bendis, of course.

The ultraviolet spectrum was too much. Gold lanterns don't fucking fit anywhere in there. Hacking a green lantern battery doesn't fit anywhere in the lore either, which is why Bendis was forced to change it. Your tolerance for silly stories may be low, but what Sndyer and Bendis have done is break lore completely in order to tell their dumb stories.

The Johns spectrum was fucking stupid too. In what universe is "greed" an emotion? Shit, going thru the list, the only ones that are clearly emotions are Rage, Love, and Fear. At least Happiness is a real emotion. That said the idea that emotions are colorful and just floating around the universe waiting to manifest into magical beams is really fucking lame in itself so it's a lost concept to start with.

Marvel and DC are both terrible. But Marvel fans are more supportive of Marvel than DC fans are. The problem lies in the comic book fans and the comic book store owners. they do not want comics to expand to a wider audiences. They want to retain control of the comic book industry in their own little selective corner.
Also other people just do not see comics as a cool thing to do.

Yes, you can put on TV shows in the background while you're doing other things. Movies are easier to consume, lots of people consume them. Like DC movies/cartoons don't have a ton of crossover appeal with the comics either. If you go in and think oh hey Batman, WW or whoever is cool in this medium and you really like Ben Affleck or something, then you go read like King's Batman which is just like this horrible soap opera about Tom King being sad and dressed as Batman, it's just not worth the time and money.

At least with manga, it's very easy to get into and there is crossover appeal with the anime or vidya too.

One thing that always baffles me when I read cape comics is that they actually pay a person money to write that trash. It isn't just that you most of the time feel like "any schmuck could have written this and made a better story." Sometimes I have a hard time imagining how an "any schmuck" could even come close to something as bad.
I feel bad for the artist who have to draw most of the shit. Imagine being an artist for Snyder or King when he gets all "poetic". And those guys count as the top writers by the industry.

DC and Marvel comics were doomed to fail eventually because they keep relying on old ass characters from 60/70 years ago. Over and over and over again ad nauseum. Nothing new, nothing kids today will call their own. Thats why people are moving to reading manga instead. Manga is full of new, creative, inventive stuff. Comics are the same stale, recycled heroes that people only care about in movies. You got a problem when My Hero Academia, an X-Men ripoff, is selling like hotcakes in America when the X-Men themselves sell 1000 copies.

It is over. Capeshit comics are finished. This is the end of their decades-long run by inertia. Their business model was never sustainable.

Compare that to X-men, that is treated like trash with writers who don't care at all. Sure they seems to try to do something now with Hickman. But that is just a good writer writing for the old guard. For the nerds that know everything about X-men. It is a Moore-esque new take or deconstruction that are interesting for those that already are fans. It is probably very clever, but kids don't care about clever they want an engaging story. Expecially if they are charged 4 dollars for 20 pages. Which is insane even if cape comics had been good.

And it will continue to do nothing creative as long as they keep rehashing the same characters that have been dissected for half a century.
DC and Marvel are doomed because they dont want to let go of their well-known characters. They will milk them until there is nothing but bones, which seems to be now.

What manga does right is that a series will always have one writer. It will always have the same consistency. Most manga have an actual ending to the story, unlike comics which keeps the story going until its eventually soft rebooted or cancelled. There is no reason to invest in comics when its a total mess like this.

As one source explained to me, “If you’re running Warner Bros., why not write off all the expenses related to these job cuts and gutting DC Universe during this year of unprecedented challenges, and start fresh in 2021?”

With the way Johns' wrote it, it was new. Old Predator was just Carol's masculinity given form due to her stress. Gerard Jones later tried to imply it was an alien parasite, but he got aborted along with his baby by Carol/Neron in the 90's. Same as his "Black Hand" who was a death fetishist instead of the cliche/proverb spouting goofball.

I'd be more inclined to believe you if his other reinventions weren't just as edgy either. Shark's first appearance since the 90's was him running up on land to eat 2 people on the beach with body parts hanging out of his mouth, Polaris gets blown the fuck up in Infinite Crisis, Tattooed Man's legacy was a generic gangster killing people and Black Hand's first appearance in Rebirth was him getting his hand melted off by the Spectre. I feel like the only ones he actually got right was Hammond and Goldface, who he was writing in his Flash run.
Don't get me wrong, I greatly enjoyed his work on GL. Just find some of his direction in it ridiculous.

MARVEL is even weirder when a lot of the characters where intentionally made to have baggage with "modern issues" of the 1960s and 1970s, where most modern writers fail to take advantage of that.
At the least the DCU panned out, so we got a look at what the film medium can do when you try to make more than one standalone movie a decade for each franchise.

G1 little on package information writers create the first universe.

Basically you can see how the stories become more and more stagnant and get shackled to what essentially is random personalities who where not created for overarching story, the shackling is from across multiple media and continuities. To make everything worse the comics/cartoon did not take themselves to seriously at some times and especially in the beginning, and you get some personalities from this time who own names.

Now you want to create a interesting character for the mad scientist to have a great narrative? Hope there is a name left of that has no personality attached to itself so you can create this character.

Want to create original characters for the comic (see lord Straxis)? Nope can not do that now (it was loose in G1/80s for comparison) you can only use official harsbro names to keep hasbros trademark, and only from the toys hasbro is selling now in stores, hope no personality is attached to the name or you get raged on, good luck writing a great story around this!

It's literally the opposite. The regular moviemakers will keep using them, but also the competition will, and any third parties. Except no one will bother putting effort in any comics that are too original since they probably won't make money from their own stories anyway.

Which would be a good point for having the same writer staying on the same character for a long time, as it used to be in many cases. Like X-men.

I think the writers need to get a incitament for being creative. Like getting a little pocket universe for their creations, and if it sells they profit and the company gets a new popular character.
But the creations needs to be free from connections to the established characters. Not Miles Morales who lives on and limits by the original. Then the creators becomes like Bendis and just try to make OC abusing the other characters. New characters and support cast need to stand on their own.

Not as familiar with DC, but at Marvel, they can't even keep Dracula consistent these days. The idea is not relevance its creativity. I say Frankenstein is more relevant to us then anything made in comics (you know franken foods and playing god and genetic modification).

Manga can experiment all the time I mean you get things like Ranma where its basically martial arts only the MC turns into a girl if splashed in water and the entire cast is made to work together (basically have the same encounter with the same curse).

You get Manga like Yu-Gi-OH where its playing cards all the time and even sports manga, you can not imagine how prevalent the Captain Tsubasa anime is in some Euro countries especially back in the day.

Its like there is no real limit and every anime/manga is doing its own thing sure there are archetypes etc however they are free to do radical changes, if you read enough DC/Marvel comics you realize how there are certain themes the comic can not deviate from.

I don't think you understand the transformer problem transformers is basically now:
1) Random toys hasbro imported with no real visual theme that would be reflected in the story. If you can not imagine this we are talking like characters who transform into tanks having a different personality then the ones who transform into planes, WHOPS can not have 4 tank characters to show this because hasbro only has 2 tanks in their toy line.

Or having for example planes be smug and hate on all other vehicles who can not fly. You can not show this in the universe since you are a slave to hasbros toy line and MUST SHOW the current hasbro toy line.

2) Limited names where some names simply acquired personalities since that one representation in the Marvel comics back in 1985 was really good so this name is stuck to this 1 personality.

Manga is published in a anthology format. The only thing keeping a series in a magazine is either fame, or ratings. And the ratings are more similar to writing letters to the editors than critical acclaim.
Series with good letter ratings get to continue, the less successful only get so so many volumes depending on magazine.

My honest opinion is that readership depends on empathy vs shock value/novelty vs social relevance.

Manga keeps on going because they have questionaries in their magazines, where series are ranked, which means the track record dictates how long the series becomes. Where there is quite the correlation to rank and merch sale.
Comic books doesn´t do that.. most likely to try to copy the idea of "critical acclaim" that exists for TV and movies. Which has zero correlation with merch sales and marketability.

DC and MARVEL has dug themselves into a trench because of those limitations. I don´t think toyline characters from less serious periods is helping.
Nor is it helping to hire a bunch of hacks who can´t write unless its for shock value. Because they will often ignore the good foundations that exist, to add.... shock value. And shock value might sell a little, but not a lot.

With Twitter that went away, and now politicians appeal to the bottom barrel garbage of Humanity while also engaging on the same platform that is Twatter and Facebook and shit, and this projects back. So you have a duo of appealing to the lowest garbage of Humanity and also becoming the lowest garbage of Humanity by interacting with it and swimming in this ocean of shit which projects backwards into your own work.

ON TOP of all the aforementioned, you also have the whisper network of SJW retards which cancels competition because there's an SJW philosophy based on an ancient marketing and business philosophy that if you cut out the top talents in a sector, that means you can become the new top with your inferior shitty garbage skills. Instead of improving if you have any capacity in the first place, it's simpler to cancel the top and become the new top that way.

Want to fix the industry? Start by sacking and replacing every manager and marketing which uses Twatter as a factor.

Good, I recommend you actually read the Dracula book its a meh Vampire story.

Frankenstein is a disorganized mess of a book(READ IT!). All the modern mythos comes from people re-imagining the public domain characters.

I only add to this that the only thing that actually started the vampire stories of modern times is a attempt to pirate/copy Dracula with the movie Nosferatu phantom of the night that was so influential that is part of the Dracula mythos now.

Any new reader to Kochikame isn't going to go "oh thank God it's got a clear ending, now I can start reading all 200 volumes of it" because the argument against capeshit is often that there's too much material and it never ends. To most manga readers starting a 200 volumes is a similar turn off even if it is light on continuity because who fucking has the time and energy to read it all, that's a giant commitment. To a lot of people even starting something like Berserk seems like a chore when it's already 40 volumes long.

Beside, if you want to compare capes comics to manga then you should compare it to Shonen Jump (Dragon ball, HxH (at first), naruto, one piece, MHA, etc...) or any other big publication which focus on a specific market (seinen, shojo,...). It's the closest thing to a DC/Marvel equivalent, except with a more efficient business model (not without its flaws however).

They are and have been for years creatively bankrupt, but their catalogue is easy to enter into like everything that isn't cape comics. Same artist/writer working on it from A to Z and a diversity of art style amongst titles guarantee something will catch your eyes. These are BASIC logic and rules than any industries outside DC/Marvel obey to.

Mangas’ best asset rest in how fast they back-up any of their somehow successful IPs with an anime adaptation that range from moderately to well animated and airs weekly. MHA is the best representation of that. It’s a rehash of every shounen, the story is trash, the characters are gimmicky but they banked on the anime production with a great animation studio. It’s trash, but its trash well-made and it has its identity because of the unique art style.

Cheaper price due to B/W and no hard cover format definitely help. Bonus because they are pocket sized. They individually sell publication rights to national companies who want to publish their IPs outside Japan. That shit was studied for efficiency/profit.

DC/Marvel are the only publishers in this world who don't care about confusing their readership.

Berserk had multiple adaptions including video games and dark medieval fantasy got a big push since Dark Souls. Berserk is often used as a references/comparaison point. Not a debate here.

Blame used to be less niche but it's either the near level as Doredoro or way lower, depending if you (respectively) ask to a 30+ year weeb or a weeb in their early 20 or younger.

There is dime a dozen books.
Manga is simply more popular, and easier to read. The same is true for "My experience with loneliness and lesbian prostitutes" and Homeless Diaries(both are manga). And its a lot easier to read.

You might see something similar in Britcomics or Eurocomics, but it never have the depth Punpun has, because PunPun goes on for entire volumes, end on end, dealing with more and more of why Punpun can´t fucking into life. And his questionable social background.

They will preach some form of unity, or maybe even a issue.
But they will never soapbox.
The gold standard was set by Tezuka, where a lot of works he writes will have some part of the story dedicated to the educational aspect, which is not that different from making a big soapbox speech. Its just presented better.
