They have to, both Patrick and Squidward are leaving Spongebob for their own shows, similiar to when Cleveland left Family Guy.

But unlike Cleveland, Patrick and Squidward are main characters and are central to Spongebob, you literally can't continue the show without them.

Was Hillenberg really the only person holding Nick back from making Spongebob spin-off shows? I get he knew about Kamp Koral while overseeing the third movie but no way was he aware of the Squidward and Patrick shows.
