What a disappointment. Good thing this isn't connected to Insomniac's Spider-Man, and Square Enix is doing their own version. Because I can't imagine Insomniac having to write around this.

Where did they go wrong? What improvements can be made? I believe character focused/driven games like Spider-Man would have been far better.

Crystal Dynamics just aren't a particularly great developer. They out out some competent yet generic Uncharted clones with the Tomb Raider reboots, but they're hardly world-class.

I've never played the Tomb Raider reboots. It just seemed like torture porn where they beat the hell out of Laura for cheap "strong female character overcomes hell" stuff instead of her being a badass. Well that and people are trying to push her as a lesbian I guess. Crystal Dynamics made Soul Reaver and the second and third wave of Tomb Raider games.

Lara character model in Rise of the Tomb Raider is perfect, whereas the character models here look like they were Modred from Power defaults.

I'm thoroughly convinced that Inhumans were only pushed because Disney didn't want to have a Fox-owned property getting any good new material (in case they try to fight to keep the adaptation rights) and pushed the Inhumans so hard as a sort of X-men replacement.
Too bad none of the Inhumans or their storylines are nearly as interesting as anything from the Claremont era

AIM is more science-oriented.
You bring in Hydra, and that means you have to bring in Red Skull eventually. Hydra already has a presence in the MCU, I think they're trying to distinguish themselves by using AIM. Most people have probably forgotten it was introduced in Iron Man 3

It's not something Disney will say outright, but it's pretty clear in how they tried to give the Inhumans all these traits similar to old-school X-men stories.
On any other day, Kamala Khan would have been a mutant. The Inhumans always had more of a sci-fi slant to them such that they were part of an entirely separate society from normal humans. This is in contrast to the x-men who are meant to be normal people who just so happen to have these powers they were born with and have to learn to control, but are otherwise average members of modern day society.
Kamala clearly falls more into the latter category but she was made an inhuman instead.

It's kind of a unstated fact we all know and Disney pretends wasn't the case at the time. It holds true for the Fantastic Four too, who didn't have a solo book for years. More evidence of this was the fact that the Insomniac Spider-Man game didn't have The Baxter Building or any F4 nods in the world. It wasn't until later in the game's life cycle, when the FOX deal finalized, did Insomniac treat fans to F4 connected Spidey costumes such as Future Foundation and Bag-Man.

As for Kamala, you could argue that the other reason she was made an Inhuman was the Kree background, which in turn connects her to Carol and her history with the race

I've watched people that play the game that the game play is generally solid and fun with some minor niggles. The only consistent complaints I've seen from the takeaways and the streams are that the camera shakes too much and too often, the screen effects can get too busy and cloud out the action enough to actually bog down framerate, the camera zooms in at inopportune times when using certain moves, the enemy variety is a bit limited, they're having issues with matchmaking, and the lock-on system is iffy because you can break lock when using certain skills.

The game does look fun, I plan on playing the open beta, but they need to sort out those QoL issues before final release.

That's kind of the weird thing about it.
It looks competent, and it looks like the same gameplay I've seen from every AAA action title this generation
Assasins Creed Origin and Odyssey, GoW4, Uncharted, TLOU, HZD, Spiderman, The Arkham games, Hellblade.
All competent action games but there's some je-ne-sais-quoi to how familiar and standard it feels. I feel like I'm looking at the FPS genre in the 360/PS3 era. Many competent games in that genre in that period, but most were indistinguishable from each other

True, but it does temper my interest when I know it's basically the same game with a new skin.

I played it. The beginning of the game is basically just a setup to make you play all the characters and act as a tutorial. It kinda feel like clone and a mix of every TPS game in the last 10 years. THEN you get to the part where the game is basically Destiny 2 clone. It's "design by committee" the game. It's really well made besides the buggy matchmaking but it's nothing groundbreaking and it's just another game as a service. The combat also got some depth to it.

Sports games are inherently more egregious with regurgitating mechanics because of the nature of sports, the rules in sports are set in stone. Unlike other genres, there's only so much a video game that revolves around sports can do to change things up so it can garner interest. Somehow, people flock back to them despite the games being the exact same thing it's been for decades, just with more glitz and polish. I'm not the best authority to speak about this subject because I only watched my friends play Madden and don't touch sports games in general, but that's my take.

That's the inherent issue with your expectation, the Avengers are a team, and it's difficult to sell the name of a team when they're in their own games, possibly licensed out to different developers, and all coming out at different times and levels of quality. Spider-Man being the focus of his own game means that they can tailor the entire game to the character, so it's far more difficult to develop a game with a team roster that ranges from people like Hawkeye all the way up to people like Thor that can accommodate for the capabilities of each character, so compromises in the design must be made, or else you'll end up with people flocking to Thor and other heavy hitters and leaving other characters behind, because why the fuck would they gimp themselves?

You're 99% right. But back in the day, Sports games used to incorporate all manner of dumb but fun side-modes to give people mroe bang for their buck, anything to convince people not just to keep the old game and pick up the new one.
That's kind of the issue: most Madden and FIFA fans have been conditioned to pick up the newest game, despite the new content amounting to a balance patch in other games.
The comparison to this generation's action games is that there seems to be a standard template of features and mechanics in these games that doesn't really evolve much or distinguish one entry from another. I think that's my biggest issue: it seems like a very inoffensive action game, rather than an ambitious or passionate one.

Difference is, in MGR button mashing will get you killed literally right at the first boss fight (and arguably at the beginning of the game.
This game seems like it's in the Arkham/Spiderman camp where you can spam the same high-damage combo over and over on 90% of enemies.

The thing about this is that it is almost an entirely acceptable approach simply because both parties, the companies and the consumers, are both taking risks when venturing into something different. The developers/publishers investing in a project that can put them out of work, and consumers for being minus 60 bucks for an experience that they are unsure if they will enjoy. Both sides enjoy a sense of familiarity because it's safe, but the problem with that is that it will just make people complacent and make the developers not bother to stray too far from what's safe, and consumers too accustomed with what's safe and either dull their expectations or become contemptuous with how things are, but no real idea on what to convey what they really want to make things more interesting. I've seen the streamers call the chat out on what they think would make the game better when they lay criticism on the game, and the person either couldn't come up with anything aside from "just make it better" or they straight up suggest something that's already been done before, at which point even other people criticizing the game lambast their suggestions because, of course, that person's suggestions suck, and theirs don't.

Development is a fucky process, people take way too much for granted on how difficult it is to strike a balance of creativity and fun with mechanical viability, which is exactly why people just opt to play it safe.

I've watched plenty of players trying to approach a fight on Brutal or even Hard difficulty as Hulk and immediately eat shit when they felt they could approach even relatively mundane looking enemies with an unga mentality. Those shield and staff motherfuckers as well as the weapon specialist beekeepers would fuck them up if they weren't addressed properly while all the other chaos was going on around them. The combat isn't innovative, and they're even upfront that the difficulty slider pretty much means that enemies will have their hitpoint, stun, and damage counters raised, but it seems far from braindead.

Even before roughly halfway through the Arkham games, you usually have every tool at your disposal to trivialize the vast majority of fights because you're given so much leeway to approach multiple situations before things can potentially go to shit, especially with the broken ass detective vision mechanic. Those staff enemies are relatively difficult to read, hit like a truck with their melee and range attacks, are pretty tough themselves and require pretty much all of your attention, all while dealing with the mooks that can distract and stagger you. There's much less margin of error with them than any knife, shield, or gun wielding asshole in any of the Batman games.
