Well, not in the traditional sense.
Adult Party Cartoon set the bar pretty damn low, so I guess this'll probably be at least an iota better. It definitely won't be good, but, more likely than not, it'll be better. I'd say 80% chance one episode will just be tits and ass and the rest will be "adult" humor that entirely misses the point of Ren & Stimpy. So, enjoy 3 or 4 new webms showing up on /gif/, at least.

It’s all a PR move to keep Comedy Central and Viacom in the news. CC got a new president less than a year ago and he’s making major moves to produce a shitload of content, even cucking Netflix out of more John Mulaney stuff. This obviously isn’t as far in development as the other stuff they’ve announced (Beavis & Butt-head, Clone High, Jodie) but it’s probably just to stall using a known IP while they hammer out a deal for whatever their next thing is.

Most of Ren and Stimpy is really poorly timed and slow. For something that has come to be known as high-octane insanity, it really spent way too much screen time on absolutely nothing. My controversial opinion is that Cow and Chicken honestly captured the spirit of Ren and Stimpy better.

Simpsons has always been the most easily accessible family "adult" cartoon. We watched it in class while I was in 5th grade as afterwork entertainment until school let out. Disney also gladly shows it in their family media Disney Plus commercials while mostly leaving out other Fox cartoons like Family Guy (I think I saw it once in the background of posters) so that doesn't really surprise me.

I will agree this doesn't mean they never would show R&S stuff again, they were just put in a new game. Now that this has come out though it might be a phased out IP as a Nick series depending on the direction it goes. If it's Adult Party Cartoon 2 Nick would probably feel inclined to lesson their appearances in nostalgic-based content. Plus I don't think after the allegations came out that they would go back to him for the short. At least with game inclusions it's not working with him it's just making a model and calling it a day, I don't even think the characters in the new kart game have dialogue.

If John K. was actually involved, the show would be on constant hiatus, taking multiple years to complete a single season, with "jokes" consisting entirely of people screaming and making funny faces. Ren & Stimpy was great in spite of John's incompetence. The rest of the crew extracted what little good he had to contribute, and filled in the blanks.
The proof is that the latter half of the show, after he was fired, was exactly the goddamn same as the stuff that did have him work on it.
APC proved that he doesn't know how to run a show himself, and that he isn't fucking funny.
And Cans without Labels should be everlasting proof that the man is grossly incompetent and incapable of delivering.

John K. not working on this is the best possible option. The man is not funny, and he is anathema to efficiency.

Are you talking about seasons 3-5? If so you don’t know what you’re talking about. The vast majority of those episodes are the equivalent of dog shit and even the worst Nick shows are funnier. A lot of it was obviously still bitter at John and brought the shows quality down just to spite him. There were definitely rules and a traditional animation process for the first two season of R&S that got completely thrown out when he was fired, a lot of it can be blamed on John for being a maniacal autist, but a lot of it can also be blamed on Nick for constantly wanting them to change shit mid-production or even denying entire episodes after they approved them. Even Bob Camp episodes during the spumco years dealt with the same thing. The whole production was a shit show and they had to dumb down everything just to get everything to go smoother with production.

Probably because Ren was really hard for people to draw. I think on one of the commentaries someone said that they dreaded drawing Ren because of how easy he is to screw up. That’s probably why they just went on model for him.

If you want to go really deep, he's always been broken. His dad was really abusive of him and John lashed out in the same way most guys do by doing everything he was told never to do. Drugs, sex, alcohol. It's why from day one he was always seen as a mental case compared to most quite artists. He also saw Ralph Bakshi as a huge inspiration for him personality wise, but never tried to understand how Bakshi could at least control himself to get a cartoon done. Then the pedophile stuff on top of that, probably coming from how a lot of artists prey on younger girls to make up for how they got nowhere when they were young. It's all a really sad spiral.

There was also the problems of the network not knowing what they wanted. Like the naked beach frenzy episode apparently was finished on time and supposed to air, then they told him to erase all the nipples. Then after they did that they axed the whole thing. The worst thing spike did though was still give John enough money to finish APC's production.

Ren & Stimpy is my favorite cartoon, and so I have a lot of thoughts about how they should handle a revival.

I think the best way to do it would be to give every episode to an entirely different team. Remember the episodes of Adventure Time with guest directors? Imagine a full series of that. (Or the guest-drawn issues of the Invader ZIM comics.) The biggest benefit to Ren & Stimpy as characters was always their versatility. They could be outlaws in the old west, or a normal husband and wife couple, or animals being kept as pets. I think the show should take that versatility and Crank It Up to Eleven.

Each episode wouldn't just have a different setting. Each episode would look different. Each episode would have a different genre. I'd want to pull in people from all over the animation world, not just Hollywood. I'd want old Newgrounds flash animators. I'd want anime directors. I'd want stop-motion people whose work is shown at film festivals. I'd want this to be the most versatile cartoon since Space Dandy.

If any industry people are reading this, please pitch this to Comedy Central. I don't care if you take full credit. This is for the good of Ren & Stimpy.

While a lot of those guys are good at coming up with unique expressions, that was only one aspect of what made R&S so good, and in my experience they tend to lack the foundation of solid drawing fundamentals which underpins the whole thing. That was really what made the good parts of John K's blog so valuable.

It's not just the dynamic but also the drama that came with it. Ren and Stimpy are two characters that don't really work together both in concept and in execution, which is where the drama and psychosis come into play. You can't just copy-paste that onto something else and expect the same results. Like, you'll never get another character so believable awful as Ren and get a full scene of him considering murdering Stimpy in his sleep.

I get why the show is loved. I still enjoy Space Madness a great deal. But none of those qualities need be unique to R&S. In fact, I'm not even sure those things will carry over since this reboot is a "re-imagining."
This is a query I would lay at the feet of every reboot, not just R&S. And I fully expect the answer to be "to milk a franchise" 99% of the time. All of our feelings about John K, the twitter mob, Dana Terrace and the CalArts crew aside, I'm just not seeing a particularly sensible rationale here. I guess they want their entire animation block to be one big nostalgia trip, and R&S was the most appropriate IP to fill out that fourth spot.

I honestly think that they would've be a lot less cold on it if they had actually announced it with a showrunner attached, especially one that checks the right boxes. The industry is so nepotistic that the second there's a 'talented artist' attached, any attack on a project becomes an attack on the people who made it, and it can hurt your chances at employment down the line.

I don't know why everybody is piss scared to actually do anything involving hard-cutting, aimless slapstick. But there's definitely an audience for it. That's why the new Looney Tunes cartoons are doing so well.

If nobody is gonna offer it, then of course executives are gonna stay saddled to the idea that rebooting old shit like this is the only answer. Because that's the only well they pull from.

To act like good slapstick is somehow too low-brow is just as short sighted of a perspective as the powers that be cranking out reboots like name recognition is all that matters.

Nobody wants to learn how to do it, that's the problem. Nobody wants to study the films, comics, and cartoons that pioneered it. Honestly, as much of a morally bad person John K is, he at least made sure his staff understood that stuff while they were making R&S. When they weren't working he'd give people homework of individual artists to study and report back to him on why they work and how it could be incorporated into the show. It's why his blog, besides the rants about shows he hates, is actually a really good tool or new artists.
If John K. hadn't taken such a dark path in life he should have become a animation teacher, maybe we'd have better cartoons today.

That this show is being made after the John K controversy just highlights how despicably greedy and desperate TV executives have become.
No one remotely passionate about animation wants this to exist.

But also, fuck all of the remakes that are being pumped out nowadays.

Thundercats, Scooby Doo, Powerpuff Girls, Duck Tales, Loony Toons, some of these might even be good shows but at their core they are all unoriginal and designed to be recognizable and palatable to general audiences.
