By the mid to late 90s, Disney was just synonymous with lame, G-rated, singing kiddy shit. and nothing with a talking animal that looked disney-ish was considered cool. Kids wanted something edgy that had guns and spikes. If anyone saw a show with a talking animal on it they would not want to give it any chances since the characters were probably going to start singing, which a lot of other shows made fun of around that time.
This was a bigger part of why shows shifted over to more regular life type of stuff like Weekenders or Kim Possible, Disney was trying to not be stereotypically Disney by making shows about teens in highschool. Nickelodeon was already leaning in this same direction with the success of Hey Arnold and most of their live shows. WB was shifting over to importing anime which also mostly features high school teens having adventures.
so it was not because anyone recognized furries as bad, as much as it was kids not wanting to watch anything with cartoon animals thinking it was safe sterile kiddie shit that sang annoying songs and danced. The genre of shows that made fun of the concept like Eek! The Cat, Rockos Modern Life, and Angry Beavers already happened in the 90s too.
