I mean, for a while, he still wanted to use his powers to make some money, even as a superhero. But then Gwen's dad happened. Gwen happened. And then a whole lot of other shit.
Peter has a tendency to redirect his anger towards himself. He initially only blamed Ben's death on himself, and if it were just that alone, he might have been able to handle it. But in his long, impossibly long superhero career, he's experienced too much tragedy. Too many people have died right in front him, many of them precious to him.
He's a broken man. The more people die right in front of his eyes, the less he becomes able to handle it. At some point, every fucking life in New York became his responsibility and he can't walk away from that. Part of the reason is that he's so fucking successful. The more lives he saves, the more he's convinced he can save even more. The more lives slip through his fingers, the more he's convinced he has to do better. It's pretty much a negative feedback loop.
