It's not Space Usagi. It's a new, original project. By the sounds of it, I think it sounds like some sort of urban fantasy or cyberpunk, but that's just my interpretation. It's a 3rd iteration of Usagi. It's not strictly and adaptation of "Usagi Yojimbo" either.

Probably because Invincible is easier to market as violent since the many of characters are violent humans. Netflix can slap some edgy imagery on the title card and description and someone who didn't know anything about it would have a decent idea what they were in for. Meanwhile Usagi's animal designs would undoubtedly make random people think the show was for a younger audience at first glance, and if you overplay the violence when advertising to make a point you risk pushing expectations in the wrong direction. Ironically the way Usagi blends genres, one of the comics greatest strengths, is probably the biggest barrier to making it marketable.

So it's going to be a Not_Space_Usagi (but also Totally_Space_Usagi) futuristic cartoon, that allows Stan to eat a cake and have a cake (by both referencing the original comic - most likely in flashbacks - and not changing it's canon for the sake of a loose adaptation), which will star Yuichi (who's guaranteed to be a 100% Usagi clone), a ninja (Chizu?), a bounty hunter (Gen), a thief (Kitsune... or, if we're lucky, Kiyoko) and a pet dinosaur (Spot)? With possible appearances of two virtually immortal characters to help bridge the gap between the cartoon and the comic even more?

I can dig it.

Most of the negativity were people who clearly never read Space Usagi nor were very knowledgeable about Usagi in general who dropped by to hate on that horrible sjw infested Netflix thingamajig. They mostly spew empty buzzwords and there was that one ridiculous guy who had no idea how creator owned content works and kept repeating how now everyone in the comic will be turned black and gay. If a fan wasn't happy, it was because the cartoon won't be an actual adaptation of the main story.

Kitsune is not a bad character as a concept (and I love some of her stories), but many of her actions are simply horrible. Constantly being reckless, fucking over her friend(s) for the sheer joy of it, using Usagi as an unpaid and unwilling shield/bodyguard and then getting into more trouble, which puts lives of everyone around her at risk... And then coming out on top with ALL the money. To be honest, I think Stan went a bit too far with her and she lost a lot of her charm in the last 10 years or so. She still shines from time to time, but more often than not her actions leave the reader confused or even furious.

But the violence was never really overplayed that much, since it usually functions on Chambara style rules - the tensions comes usually from the anticipation to the conflict, which is then often settled in less than a minute.
1 slice and it's over.

The most violent stuff usually dealt mass warfare, like with Usagi's past in Lord Mifune's army, and when ever any one calls in a volley of archers.

The only issue really is that you can't market a mature action cartoon without copious amount of blood, but it's still not outlandish or cute enough to market to kids.

Which is sad it has to be such binary choices, because I don't think it would've been so hard to market this to older kids or teens like they do with Voltron or She-Ra. Just make the violence more stylized, the pacing a tad more quicker and composed the fights where you can still have death, but not gore.

I mean, at it's surface, Usagi is just furry Samurai Jack, and until Season 5, that show never needed to have hyper-violence to justify itself as a dark, mature cartoon.

There are still good stories with her, like Traitors of the Earth (and the very next one), where she spends most of the time being miserable (allowing Kiyoko to shine) and that one story where she gets locked up by inspector Ishida (in which she has her roguish charm set to 200%). There is also The Thief and the Kunoichi, a fucking amazing story as a whole, but with an infamous last page. One which broke /co/'s back when it comes to tolerating Kitsune. Even Sakai admitted later in the letters column that things went a bit too far.

I don't have any issue ranking Sakai as a top tier cartoonist, among the ranks of Herge, Jeff Smith, or Don Rosa. But I don't really think much about comparing Usagi to TMNT, despite all the mutual crossovers, because at this point TMNT is hardly defined by a singular vision and also because I think the real genius of TMNT was marketing. It was Eastman and Laird's pursuit of merchandising opportunities that pushed them into the big time and even before they exploded the Turtles had an RPG and miniatures line.

Yep, he was colorized in promotional posters. Guess what color he was.

He was also recolored brown for the Usagi Classics colorized reissue series. They are hammering down how he isn't Jotaro's real dad HARD.

I think it's safe to say the Mariko ship has sailed. There's some lingering affection on both sides but she seems to be pretty well settled with Kenihci. The big contenders are Tomoe (Who hasn't appeared in ages) and Chizu (who is up to her neck in her own shit)

There's three side-books, Space Usagi, Senso and Yokai. Senso is kind of an ending, so should probably be read after everything else. Yokai after Sasuke is introduced. Dunno about Space Usagi, but probably after Daisho.

But in reality you should probably read Sakai's 47 Ronin to get a feel for what Usagi is and I dare say 47 Ronin is superior, even the art looks more polished and Sakai's no slacker

At the time they claimed to have found a crew they had faith in and were moving ahead with an animated project but for reasons unclear it never came to light.

My biggest fear was that this had to do with some bullshit surrounding Dreamworks and Despicable me, since shortly after Sergio and Mark announcing this, a huge new movie franchise with an MC named 'Gru' was making all the money.

You could make the argument that Usagi actively chooses to get into armed conflict on the geishu clans behalf because he believes they are good people. With Kitsune there has been more than one occasion where she has basically used Usagi as a human shield to protect herself from getting murdered. She basically roams around, finds the most dangerous dude possible, steals from him but gets caught, and the Usagi bails her out. I feel like people would be less sick of her shit if every story involving her didn't have the plot instigated by her fucking up.

Yes, Kitsune got more and more impudent, kept stealing from Usagi and others and kept risking everyone's lives for loot by being reckless during her heists. Once she even thought Usagi was killed because of her, but once it turned out that he wasn't, she was back to using him as a meatshield like nothing ever happened and Usagi was 100% swordproof. With Geishu, Usagi jumps to help because he wants to, but with Kitsune he is almost always framed and forced to defend himself or coerced to help. Kitsune simply NEVER LOOSES. Even when she's being a dumb idiot, she gets miraculously saved. And then usually fucks over her savior.

That really is the big problem with me for her. She's supposed to be this master thief, but we never really see her successes, only the times she didn't get killed and stole from the people who helped her out.
If Stan wrote a story where she was an active participant instead of a problem creator, I'd like her more. After all, her competition is Tomoe and Chizu, and they're all about actively getting stuff done.

To be entirely fair, in a setting where becoming a prostitute is sometimes the only other choice destitute women have, I can't entirely blame her.

Her mentor got killed by a dude who saw through their ruse, on the fucking spot. Her mentally handicapped friend was framed for crimes Kitsune *herself* didn't even commit and was Japanese crucified for it. Shit was brutal. The fuzz didn't even apologize for that when it came to light they killed the wrong guy and the one actually responsible for the crimes, being a samurai, was given a much less excruciating death penalty when the truth was revealed.

Kitsune is a product of her environment as much as Chizu is; not everyone can rise above their station the way Tomoe did and even she got married off to some dong thanks to a shithead courtier and, hell, I like Noriyuki but that kid didn't even stop to think how his *most loyal vassal who has saved his ass personally at least 3 or 4 times* might feel about it.

Yeah, it does kinda suck that she keeps using Usagi/Gen/etc. as a shield, I won't lie, but she really has no other means to keep going and unless she has a warehouse full of stolen money saved, she's eventually going to slip up when she gets older and that'll be then end of it. Maybe Gen could make an 'honest' woman out of her (though I don't have high hopes for his life expectancy either.)

I sometimes get the feeling she's just trying to enjoy what life she has while she can. Usagi being who he is, even if he doesn't approve of her life, can't do much but help her when they cross paths.

She's shown no shortage of marketable skills with her traveling entertainer shtick and now she has Kiyoko to worry about. I'm not implying Noodles 2.0 but what's gonna happen if she herself bites off more than can chew with now meddler around to act as a safety net.

And more importantly the issue isn't that she's a thief. She's one who actively screws over the only people who would have stood up for her and then laughs about it. You can only see her rob her benefactor so many times before you stop blaming the environment and start blaming her. Individual responsibility is still a thing hard life or no and you can't keep using "A girl has to do what she can to get buy" as an excuse for her actions.

She probably doesn't see the potential of, say, building an inn someplace affluent with all her money because a samurai or brigands would eventually burn it down or someone would cheat her out of it.

She sees so much as a liability beyond the here and the now, I'm still not surprised she--probably out of habit more than anything-- still pushes the two people who'd be willing to help her out in front of whatever trouble's come looking for her. It's likely all she knows.

I think it's partially because TMNT got a movie rather early on and is easier to market. Mutatant ninja turtles in modern day new york who fight an assortment of various colorful villains? Bam, easy to sell.

Pretty accurate historical fiction set in ancient japan, with all the cultural baggage that comes with it, with anthro animals? Cool, but not something that'll likely get a saturday morning cartoon, much less a movie. Ninja turtles never spent 3 issues on the mythology of japanese gods as a prequel to a story arc.

Honestly I'd be all kinds of down for a historically educational action show. You can tone down the killing and maybe just sort of...side step the prostitutes if you must. There's plenty of things to focus on outside of that. The mythology, the stories were Usagi learns how shit is made. You'd lose out on a closer adaptation but you can tweak things to be close enough.

During the Noodles arc and the story where she recruited Kiyoko she was quite clearly upset with the Samurai caste and in general how difficult life could be.

I've got the books open right now. She rejects the idea of settling down, like I said earlier. While she DOES admit that she sees life as a game, so what you've said kinda jives, she also has open contempt for her plight as she thinks people of lower castes like herself (and at the time Noodles) are just toyed with by the gods and she could never find real happiness. So what else would she do but play life as a shell game?

This is from her third story, by the by. And unless there's more than one story where this happens, during the story in the Shrouded Moon book where she thought Usagi had been killed (only for him to show back up covered in green dye) she was not only distraught about it, she actually PAID him for his help/troubles with part of the huge ass profit she made from her scheme at the time. Whoever said she

She's got a fundamentally broken attitude about her life, no doubt in part because her *own father* sold her into servitude and then almost got sold into prostitution but the series does NOT present her as being entirely cavalier about it when it comes to the few people she eventually comes to trust.

She also did give Gen his wallet back the second time.

Who the hell's even gonna voice Usagi? Or Gen for that matter; I've never liked either of the 2 VA's Gen's had (in Space Usagi and the 2003 TMNT,) but I feel like 2003 was almost in the right direction but needed to be slightly less... Bluto-ish.

Good question. Reading Usagi I never really imagined him sounding especially "gruff." Despite a lot of his past he has a generally positive disposition till anthologized. I said it before in the past but I very much imagine him like the dub version of Kenshin Himura. Genial and unassuming to most but able to get serious.

I felt that whoever voiced Usagi in the TMNT 2012 was good for the classic Usagi, at least in the context of a TMNT cross over. I dunno if he'd be able to sell those times when Usagi's far more good natured/at ease.

Presumably for Samurai Rabbit you'd need someone who can be the inverse: is typically at ease or casual but can slip into an ueber serious tone.

Gen I agree, but my ideal Usagi voice is soft spoken with a playful/enthusiastic tone and is slightly higher pitched than average (not Kenshin high, though). Unless he gets serious, then he goes an octave lower and speaks like he has weighted every word. But he never sounds even slightly raspy. TMNT 2003 was pretty close, but not quite there. TMNT 2012 sounded like Usagi in his 50's.

Stan actually didn't decide to make him brown, the artist coloring it(who I think colors for the modern IDW TMNT if that clues you in on anything) made the decision and he okay'd it upon seeing the colored work(though if it was already colored I wonder how much work it would've been to change that).

I prefer the white Kenichi, but I can see how it makes sense to make him a different color when the series is in proper color. It was kind of clear in the earlier runs when Kenichi appeared a lot that Stan attempted to make Kenichi clearly distinguishable from Usagi by giving him an angry, angular face. Kenichi can keep his unique face, bu doesn't have to look quite so monstrous when the color distinction does the job well enough. I do think it makes the literal cucking a bit more stinging for Kenichi though, who I've always liked.

but for a hypothetical proper adaptation, i think the degree of accent would make sense depending on the character. i think some characters like Gen would be better off sounding like a "rhino man" than someone blatantly japanese, but very bushido oriented characters could do well sounding distinctly japanese, pompous royals having aristocratic japanese accents, etc.

space usagi had an old pilot that seemed to be on the right path for future success and maybe a leg-in for the actual usagi, but i believe bucky o'hare flopped around that time. this put the idea into the heads of execs that space bunnies were a failed idea, leading to space usagi's TV adaptation to get scrapped.

Didn't see any threads, but having just read the latest issue, it's actually surprising that Usagi hasn't had more trouble due to his mon in the past (or maybe he just avoided certain areas). Also, as others have pointed out, these latest stories seem to be tying back to foundational character and plot events not just due to the rebooted numbering scheme but also perhaps in order to tie up certain loose ends.

Well they decided they wanted to make a samurai game because of Usagi. They initially used it as a resource for the japanese segment of the most recent sly cooper game first, but then after that were like "Wouldn't it be cool to make a samurai game where you get to wander the country?" and made GoT.
