If a series was canceled and then years later it was rebooted in a completely different manner it's basically giving the finger to the old fans. They're not the target audience anymore.
It's not just timing, but many factors. It doesn't help that it screams of cheap cash grab, like companies like EA do with for example beloved videogame series.
Even if it might be decent in a vacuum, it doesn't change what it is nor do things exist in a vacuum.
Again, the hate is perfectly understandable and justified.
