I'm playing through the series again and wanted to know this board's opinions. Which game had the best story and used the characters best?

For me, it's Knight>City>Origins>Asylum

Kinda, yeah. I really like Knight's story even though most consider it the worst. I first played it ages after release, so I wasn't there to be annoyed with how they treated the whole Arkham Knight '''reveal'''. I just appreciated it as their own take on Red Hood instead of seeing it touted as something brand new.

Plus I really like the way it used the characters. Outside of the overplayed Batman/Joker dynamic, it's pretty fun how many villains and secondary characters they brought in for the sidequests

I think the worst thing was how they tried the whole 'it's totally a new character' bullshit and then revealed the Red Hood DLC before release, which made it blindingly obvious it was Jason.

Origins is underrated in the series cause the gameplay is pretty much just City again, but it's story is actually pretty good. We don't get many stories that explore the relationship between Batman and Alfred and it's neat to see a young angry Batman in over his head.

Asylum is my favourite. Just a tight little Batman story that might as well might be a comic or a BTAS episode. Also awesome horror atmosphere, something other games were utterly devoid of to my chagrin.
City and Origins had better bosses, but honestly I didn't like their stories, more gimmicky gadgets and uninteresting open worlds.
Knight is a fucking joke in every sense of the word and improving on combat doesn't save it.

I think the Red Hood DLC was meant to be a red herring by going "look, Jason can't be the Arkham Knight as he's already the Red Hood as shown by this DLC" but it just didn't work.

What I never understood is how in Arkham Origins he wore the more armored batsuit while in Arkham Asylum and City he wore the more traditional briefs suit. So he downgraded his batsuit in the time between Origins and Asylum? Why? Or was his usual batsuit (the armored one) getting washed the night Arkham Asylum happened?

There's not great continuity in Origins cause narratively it's a prequel, but it still had to lead on from City gameplay-wise. The art direction is also quite different from the first two games, it's a lot less stylised than Asylum or City

Replayed all of them recently. Asylum and City play well and feel very atmospheric. Knight would’ve been great if it wasn’t for how much they shove the fucking Bat-tank down your throat, so it is only okay. Think it’s narrative was alright though: still annoyed it was Jason but didnt play it originally until 2016 so I wasn’t around for the hype or subsequent dissapoinent.

Origins feels the weakest by virtue of it being barely connected narratively to the other three, and aside from that it’s overall narrative and style felt weaker as well.

Overall, Asylum = City > Knight > Origins

But I’d be lying to myself if i said I didn’t love playing Knight’s Predator AR Challenges with Red Hood.

I'm still holding out hope that WB Montreal is working on another game so that Origins doesn't remain the black sheep of the series

I just want to see more of the Arkhamverse. If there’s one thing Knight did well, it was laying the groundwork for other possible DC Games
>Random thugs talk at times about the metas in Metropolis and Central City (Superman and Flash)
>Lexcorp and Queen Industry buildings in Gotham
>Lex Luthor’s voice message to Bruce during the Hush side-mission
>Kate Kane’s voice message in the same mission
>That one thug conversation about the water people (Aquaman & Atlantis).

I reckon a Flash game has become much more feasible with the advancements of the next gen. Something like the PS5's SSD should be able to handle moving around a world at high speeds.

I just want more video games based on other superheroes. The only worthwhile comic games have only ever really stuck to Batman or Spider-Man

I definitely agree Knight is underrated. I can understand not liking the Bat-Tank, but the rest of the gameplay is a fantastic evolution. I think the story is better than most would say, even if Batman/Joker has been the focus of all the games

Black Mask twist aside, it has the most interesting story and very strong characterizations for Batman, Alfred, Gordon, Joker, Bane (surprisingly), and others. It also felt more cinematic despite the lower budget.

It's alright, if you know what you're expecting: A side scrolling Metroidvania that lacks some of the Arkham series' staples, but solid otherwise. The environment isn't as interesting as any of the other games and the worldbuilding is minimal. Plus, the stealth sections are terrible.

I do like the comic-style cutscenes, though. Also, the boss battles were surprisingly decent. They felt very different from each other and relied on different gameplay aspects and gadgets to complete.

Rocksteady created some great, even amazing gameplay but the plot and storylines of those games are really bad, bad bossfights, non-sensical stuff like Tim Drake marrying Barbara, bad boss fights or simply nonexistent.

I'm still mad how Strange is treated as Batman's match only to be defeated in a shitty cutscene.
Rocksteady should've been more cretaive.

He didn't start using it. The entire city was covered in fear gas. If Bats was seeing Joker for the rest of the game after being exposed for about 30 minutes, imagine what all of Gotham City is seeing after getting a whole fucking cloud for what was probably longer than Bats's exposure.

Origins is extremely underrated. It gives the rest of Gotham and the rogues a better chance to shine than most of the rest of them. Bane is at his best, and the arcs Batman and Joker go on are more compelling than the rest of the games, which are more about Batman trying to stop the bad guys without any real development. About the only substantial complaint I had was Black Mask being swapped out, he's one of my favorite underrated villains and they did him dirty.

Both Bruce and Joker die. That's why Batman's eyes are dead stares at the end: his ability to be emotional was destroyed.

I love the way Knight looks. The bright lights, rain, the way the Beyond Gotham is being constructed are all great. The "Joker virus" stuff is fucking stupid but it led to some good lines and I feel like The Bat so much in that game.

Origins is probably my favorite, though. You've got the Christmas atmosphere, all the villains, a great Joker, and a cool, different Batman.

City and Asylum are fine.

Asylum, by far. The more ambitious and distinct the stories got from standard Batman material the worse they became. Asylum is a very basic story with a stupid ending, but the bulk of it works because it stays out of the way and lets the game's setting shine. The later games had serviceable story moments in various side quests, but once again Gotham itself was the real star of the show (nothing in Arkham Knight's plot left an impression on me like stumbling across the posed corpses on Founder's Island, for example).

With the rumors about a new WB Games Batman game being revealed at DC Fandome, what do you want to see out of the next game?
For me, it's the Ventriloquist. Either tying him into the main story as a bit of a detour at some point or a sidequest.

Free Roaming as the rest of the BatFamily. Maybe Co-Op. I'd also like a solid variety of different costumes that aren't paid DLC released after launch.

No Riddler Trophies. Dear God was that shit the most tedious unfun part of those games. Keep in mind I'm talking about the actual Trophies and the various ways to get them, but not stuff like the Riddles. The Riddles were fun and I like them. Hunting down Riddler should be the accumulation of solving a bunch of Riddles he's set up around the game world you have to find and solve, each one giving you a piece of a bigger Riddle you have to solve to find him.

Origins and City are my favorites, actually. The map was perfect in size and scope and the villains were memorable. I think I liked Origins more for being set around Christmas and having heavy snow compared to City's sleet/rain.

I think it would be interesting to replace the sort of stale Two-Face/Penguin gang rivalry with some lesser-utilized "crime bosses". Maybe have different sections of the map be dominated by Black Mask's guys, Ventriloquist+Scarface's guys, etc. Similar to City, I suppose.

Maybe some kind of Gangwar between different powerful fractions all trying to take control of Gotham now that Batman is "gone" after the Ending of Knight.
For Factions, they could use:
> Court of Owls
> Order of St. Duma (Azrael)
> Bane and his mercenary
> Penguin and his Gang
> False Face Society (Black Mask)
> The Falcones

Ventriloquist should appear as a side quest in my opinion. Pyg, Deacon Blackfire and Anarky need to reappear.
Two Faces definitely needs to used as a bigger thread then what he was used for in the previous games.

I don't know if they'd do a sequel to Knight considering the ending. Maybe if they went the Dick as Batman route, but otherwise I think the likely thing is they'll do another prequel.

The Court of Owls would be a great pick and hopefully the rumours are true. I'd love to see them in another medium

This is just my crackpot theory but I think that Didio had some influence over the Arkham games, especially over Rocksteady made ones. Going by WB Montreal own teaser image there is gonna be six factions in the new game, with two being confirmed to be GCPD and League of Assassins. The other four are likely to be the Courth of Owls, Order of Saint Dumas, gangs of the Joker or Penguin, maybe even the Bludhaven Police Department depending how big this game is.

The rumors are hinting a reboot, I think is gonna be a relatively young Batman with Robin being Jason Todd, Batgirl Barbara Gordon and Nightwing Dick Grayson. I hope there is DLC campaigns where Jason gets “killed” and Babs crippled. I hope they avoid Batwoman, Damien , Bluebird, Duke or Batwing.

I think it could work in a Batman game. Assuming this is a follow-up to Origins, it'd still be a young Batman. You could have the Nemesis system for the standard henchmen and every time they're put away there's a chance they come back like in the Mordor games.

You might even be able to make it work with the supervillains themselves. Have there be an early Two-Face or someone whose starting their life of crime and have them be a presence throughout the game depending on how much you attack them.

Asylum can't be beat in that department. In Origins i like the christmas aesthetic and the slightly cleaner look of everything. Knight is gritty and a bit noir.

Maybe i feel like City's just kinda meh compared to the others.

For every Two-Face or Joker where their look is practically as perfect as you could get, there's a Bane or Harley that is designed super weirdly. Even Catwoman in City looks like a sex doll with the big lips and heavy makeup. Poison Ivy was similar, except she had the strange glowing eyes. I much prefer the more realistic looks they had for them in Knight

I appreciate the fact that it was just the first two being rather stylised but fuck, the regular people just looked retarded at some points. The women genuinely all looked like bimbos.

Aside from that, it was such a weird mish-mash of quality when it came to the actual designs of the characters. The ones that were too simple to get wrong were fine (Batman, Clayface, Strange) but for the others it was a toss-up of whether it would be good or bad. Freeze and Riddler are near perfect representations of the characters but then there's some stupid ones like Ra's al Ghul or Zsasz.

It was really confusing how they screwed up the Barbara getting shot scene. In the comic, Joker shoots before she recovers from the shock of Joker being at her door instead of her friend. This lets the story still fit into continuity where Babs never stops being Batgirl until that point, as even trained people can get caught off guard. But having Joker conceal the gun and Barbara running away just made no sense. Maybe it was just a hallucination, but Joker was able to show what happened to Jason as well.

The gameplay is closest to City (to the point of being a rehash in a ton of ways) but a lot less polished, which is a problem because Arkham's gameplay relies on everything being polished. Unlike a conventional action game where jank can be overcome with player skill, in Arkham games jank just stops the flow completely. Damn near everything is contextual, so you have to rely on the game registering every action properly.

Arkham City's story was shit. Instead of playing up the whole Escape from NY idea, they just have you chasing after an antidote for Joker like a carrot on a stick for the whole game, reducing Strange to an afterthought so minor that he doesn't even get to go out as the main threat. Having him be revealed as Ra's puppet the whole time was just one final insult to it all.

Seriously, fuck Paul Dini and anybody who thinks he can write for shit. He was only good in Batman:TAS when he had Bruce Timm to bounce off of.

The worst thing about replaying Origins is how little damage you do at the beginning. If you're a skilled player all of the early fights just end up with Batman pinballing around 3 or 4 thugs to knock them down as soon as they get up, which goes on for about a minute. It gets better as soon as you get some decent upgrades and enemy variety but it's incredibly tedious.

The skill tree in Origins is retarded. Skills are placed nonsensically (you have to unlock all the health/armor upgrades before advancing the tree) and the critical strike upgrade is locked behind a sidequest that's hours deep into the game.

I felt this way when the game released, but in retrospect with how Batman+Joker focused the Arkham series is Origins establishing their relationship doesn't make the narrative feel disconnected at all, imo.

I honestly thought Origins had the strongest narrative in the series. City and Knight's squandered a lot of potential, especially regarding the main antagonist in each (Arkham Knight's identity was easily predictable and Prof. Strange turning out to be an underling or Ras was a let-down). Asylum was more of a "night in the life of Batman" approach, which isn't offensive in any way, but also not really worth praising either.
Regarding style, it was clearly a lot stronger in both Asylum and City, and then with Origins and Knight it felt like they went for a more "realistic" approach. The first two titles felt more like a deliberate mix of a bunch of different Batman mediums together.

That's absolutely not true, or at least it's not the only thing people dislike about it. The overuse of the Batmobile, weaker side mission structure (the Hush thing from City ending in a single underwhelming mission, for example) and Joker taking up the spotlight for what was basically the fourth time in the series were all things people weren't fond of. Marketing the Knight as some OC when it couldn't be moer obvious he wasn't was just dumb.

Overall, Asylum's dependency on TITAN as a plot device felt very lazy. A generic riot/breakout would have been better.

Having replayed Asylum semi-recently I think it almost completely falls apart when the plot shifts to focus on the titan stuff more fully. The first half of the game is really solid but titan as a plot device is lame as shit and feels like something from one of the lesser BTAS episodes at best.

There's a lot they could've done but it felt like they played it safe by leaning on the Joker so much, as good as Hamill is.

I actually rather liked Origin’s multiplayer, though there was a fuck ton of connectivity issues, plus only Bane and Joker thugs were lame as shit. Not even Deathstroke or Black Mask, two of the main draws to the game.

As much of a Jasonfag as I am, I’m 100% certain the Arkham series would have been better off existing without him in it. He wasn’t mentioned by name until halfway through Knight, and I agree with what other people said in it being that lady from Mask of the Phantasm or Talia.

Played through Arkham City recently, its amazing how much of the game is spent setting up a sequel that never happened

Even though Hush and Azrael were pretty much brushed aside, I still liked how many sidequests they put in Knight. At least they gave them their own missions alongside lots of other supervillains instead of forgetting about them completely. It's slightly annoying that you need the DLC for the best sidequests but it's cheap enough now that it doesn't really matter as much

I agree Hush should've had a bigger role and the League of Assassins and Ra's would've made for better villains in the third game rather than having them be in City so much and then a DLC in Knight. The revelation that it's Ra's pulling Strange's strings at the end of City would've been better, then have them be one of the big bads in Knight.

As for the "ashes of Arkham" thing, who knows. There was the spirit of Amadeus Arkham back in Asylum but I doubt they'd planned that far ahead back then. Since the League of Assassins were closely linked with the history of Gotham and the Arkham family, having Damian be the Arkham Knight would've been more fitting thematically. The alternative is a completely new character but given how many villains Knight had to juggle I don't think they could satisfyingly pulled that off without it being super obviously that new character is going to be the AK. The Jason thing was handled poorly too but I don't know if a brand new face would've worked either.

I figure a lot of these ideas were dropped or toned down in Knight because it wasn't Paul Dini writing it. And Rocksteady were probably rushed by WB too.

I was completely convinced Damian was Arkham Knight up until launch because Jason would have been way too obvious and tropey. Granted it still would have been an ass pull because you'd have to explain him being born some time before Asylum, but it would have been much more interesting to have him leading League of Assassins army than the stupid drone/militia stuff. And Damian wouldnt have been that well known to the average gamer so it would have actually worked as a twist, and they could have done something a lot more original than a mashup of Under the Hood/ Batman Beyond return of the joker.

You could explain it away as this Damian being unique to the Arkham universe in that he was grown or cloned from Bruce kind of like Boba Fett was in the Star Wars prequels. It would've felt more natural. Red Hood had already been alluded to in Asylum (they did retcon a lot of small easter eggs in that game) and the tie in comics mention him too so I assumed he was already an established vigilante in the Arkhamverse until Knight walked that back.

Cloning in any story almost always comes off as hokey. It's pretty easy to just explain Damian being the product of a one-night stand between Talia and Bruce ages before the games, as it's clear in City there's already a relationship there. The only problem there is the timeline of the games, which IIRC only spans for about a year and a half between Asylum and Knight.

Bruce first met Talia five years before City so without cloning or some accelerated ageing Damian would be too young to be the Arkham Knight. It's hard to retcon that when they've established Bruce has only been Batman for 12 years too.

Yeah the games have always been filled with interesting threads but they usually end up focusing too much on the least interesting ones.

I like Ra's Al Ghul's master plan to purge the world of criminals and create a utopia, I think it works as a good overarching conspiracy for the entire series but they dropped it after City. Instead the writers became obsessed with the Batman-Joker dynamic and adapting Into the Red Hood, playing it safe almost.

this, the Wonder City segment of City and the backstory was always my favourite part, it had such a creepy atmosphere wandering through this failed city. You get a sense fthat Ra's once tried to heal the world through less destructive means, but of course it being Gotham it all went to shit and he started using Lazarus for his own uses.

It's definitely something Dini had in his head because Knight has nowhere near the amount of interesting world building

I agree. The Wonder City segment of the game felt mystical yet ominous, and the music building up as you got more data from the decrepit robots helped to sell the atmosphere as well. I remember being nervous as hell when I first played City in 2012 because I knew something was going to jump me while wandering around.

Favourite part of it was finding the Solomon Grundy Riddler riddle down there. Makes me wonder if Ra’s knew of Grundy and / or was responsible for him in the first place.

I think from memory it's explained in the Riddler lore dumps as Ra's experimenting on him using the Lazarus Pit and other shit which eventually turns him the giant you fight in the Iceberg Lounge. I remember one of the riddles explains that Ra's abandons him when he flees Wonder City, leaving Grundy down in the sewers

Asylum > City > Origins > Knight

Asylum had the tightest narrative right until the end in my opinion, it kept me engaged throughout. And even its underwhelming ending lead to City, they built directly from it.

City, I can see why it will be seen as the superior one by vast majority. For me, I just don't get it, the League of Shadows and Ras twists are obvious and honestly the Ras parts are pretty fucking boring. The city doesn't truly feel alive and major players like Two-face or Strange (literally just a stand in for Ras) are nothing more than mere thugs.

Origins is just all right throughout, I just don't really like its use of Joker. The only thing I liked is that Joker actually legitimately tried to kill Batman at first and wasn't part of his equation.

Knight, hoo boy, you all know all the problems with it, but I'll give it this: Mark Hamill saves it. Absolutely brilliant use of overused Joker, it's the pitch perfect last hoorah.

There is lot of rumors about this game, some saying the world is five times bigger than Arkham Knight or RDR2 like size, the Nemesis system of the Mordor games is being used with multiple factions, full playable Batfamily and so on....

If any of these rumors are true the scale of the game must be massive and WB Montreal must have other WB Games studios like Monolith Productions (Shadow of Mordor) helping them.

Maybe in the single-player/campaign mode, but I honestly expect them do a Overwatch or Fortnite like multiplayer for Suicide Squad, there is just too much money on this genre and them add Harley Quinn and rest of the DC villains , bingo.
