If Hal did exist in this retelling, he would have been off world during Coast City's destruction, and his grief/regret over the incident had him love faith in the Green Lanterns and their role in the universe. He would eventually adopt the role Parallax as a means to destabilize the Lanterns' presence across other worlds and force people to lose faith in the effectiveness of the group, which would be why the Green Lantern corps had such a minimalist pretense in the first movie --- they were being beset by chaos caused by Parallax (who even they would not have assumed would be Hal, they thought Hal died off screen or disappeared several years ago) in addition to internal conflict eroding their order even further.
A sequel would tackle his fate, whether Kyle and John would defeat Parallax, either ending with the latter's destruction or begin Hal's long road to redemption, which would begin with him giving up the ring, declaring himself unworthy or some shit.
