You can shit on athletes or lottery winners all you want, but if their career gets derailed or the lottery winner doesn't turn his business into a success on the first try, it just proves some people get the one shot and if you mess up there's no longer any cash flow to try again. A lot of athletes who lose all their money also have a string of tragedies associated with their lives. Like I remember there was one guy who had his agent steal basically everything he earned, and then his wife was shot by a jealous ex and when they found their toddler the toddler was napping next to the dead body because he thought it was nap time. Like you take some guy from a rough background who bet everything on a sports career, made it at the age of eighteen, and then didn't realize how short lived it would be or how to protect it all. Those are stories of people who succeeded once, and then failed.
But if you come from a background where every year you'll passively earn $10 million, you can throw away $9 million annually on dumb business investments and still live pretty comfortably, and eventually one of those dumb investments pans out.
