Don't forget, Catra was willing to walk away from Adora. She did. But part of the reason she returned was because she recognized there were more important things to consider. She accepted that she wasn't always the number one priority for Adora, but rather than being jealous, she decided to be supportive. And this was already after Catra realized her own bad behaviour, and making amends, trying top be a better person. Part of which was Adora not accepting Catra's behaviour when she backslid on the ship.
All that character development removes the obstacles you mention. Could they realistically backslide, perhaps, but that would entail removing or ignoring that character development. Since it's a story, a narrative construct, you can't really do that, you can't pick and choose which part of the story happen.
Furthermore, I think a lot of their dynamic was caused by SW pitting them against eachother. Removing that element from the environment, removes a crucial piece of their dysfunction. Combine that with said character development, and I don't see a problem with their relationship anymore.
