Gender is a societal construct realting to identiity and one's personal experience with and relationship to gender norms (i.e men are suposed to do x, or like y). Finn's gender is non-binary as they do not identify with either gender norm.
They pronouns are used due to their longstanding use as pronouns for someone whose gender is unknown to you, and a lack of better option, some tried to popularise xe,xis, etc a few years back but it never took off, as no-one could figure out how to pronounce it.
In short, Finn is female, but not a girl.
I expect this was a waste of time, but it might educate someone i guess.
