It does okay by itself the dream sequences have aged very badly being in CGI.
It does not even hold a candle to prince of Egypt, it is very much a direct to video movie. This will give you as good feel.

It would fail miserably if it was in 3D. One of the biggest strengths when it came to PoE’s animation was the use of light and color, if it was replicated in 3D it would’ve been weaker emotionally and technically speaking.

Yeah, those two were the most epic. But 'Through Heaven's Eyes' has a beautiful message without being preachy and fitting music to boot.

And "Playing With The Big Boys Now" is just an awesome villain song. Villain songs are important too.

I agree with >>115446180 if they are saying it's the peak of North American 3D animation. Otherwise, it is safe to say that animation internationally, particularly in japan, has modestly surpassed. I don't intend to make that as an east vs west statement, animation is animation to me wherever it comes from, and PoE is still very strong piece of work.

The thing about this movie that makes it kinda hard to like is the fact that it was fueled by hatred towards Disney. This was the very first thing that Katzenberg did after leaving Disney and he got a lot of animators from there as well. It was made entirely out of spite. The whole movie screams "Look, i'm darker and more epic than that lighthearted Disney shit" I can't support that kind of petty stuff. It's not a movie that came from someone's heart, like Inside Out or Spirited Away

It was a personal project for Pete Docter, and he spent 6 years making it. It's certainly a more heartfelt movie than PoE. For starters, kids can actually get something positive out of watching it

In any case, getting one of the Pocahontas writers to solely write PoE wasn't very smart. They should've gotten someone from Lion King or other superior reinassance films. Getting the Aladdin writers for El Dorado and Shrek was a wiser move

My point is that if you're going to make an animated adaptation of it, make it longer and for adults only, instead of being only 90 minutes long and not crossing into the R rating territory. More than anything, you don't add Disney like musical numbers into a Exodus adaptation. That's just a misguided idea

I don't see kids liking the film or being engaged by it, and most adults don't find it mature or sophisticated enough. Some animated movies just don't know who their target audience is, and this happens to be one of them. Titan A.E is another good example of this. Enjoy the film if you like it, but don't expect everyone to like it. It's an adquired taste

I watched it when I 4-6 years old and I though it was awesome. I went to Sunday school so that might have effected my enjoyment as I already knew the story.
I remember being confused by the fire tornado cause that didn't happen when the teacher told it.

Kids are basically engaged by any cartoon as long as it doesnt get too slow.

Dunno, aside from a few scenes it's kind of dull and melodramatic compared to the actual stories it's based on.
Doubt people would remember it as fondly if it weren't for the music or for american jews pushing it every Easter/Passover next to the 10 Commandments as a way to show off to other jews that they're jewish without saying it outright.

It was a commercial success, but not as much as Katzenberg hoped. He was expecting this to crush the Disney Reinassance films, yet even Hercules made more money ( that film was considered a mild box office flop by Disney standards )

It isn't, studios don't see even close to the same amount from foreign box office returns as they do from domestic. It's something like 60% for domestic, and anywhere from 20% to 40% for foreign.

It's an overrated movie with plenty of weak material in it held-up mainly by the music and social usefulness.

Oh well. In any case, it didn't do as much as Katzenberg was hoping. Shrek was the first true success of the company, then Spirit and Simbad flopped so badly that they almost went bankrupt, and then Shrek 2 and Shark Tale made so much bank that they became a powerhouse for good ( at least until Illumination appeared in 2010 )

True, yet they tripped badly with El Dorado 2 years later. They were lucky as hell that Shrek succeeded, since they probably wouldn't have lasted long otherwise ( especially since Spirit and Simbad flopped )
