It's quantified in metrics in Twitter, and Facebook, and Instagram, and every pretentious facade people put out there to stake a claim on the social cause of the week. It's inherintly dishonest and misrepresentative, but the hashtags and keywords are easy to count, and the numbers present a picture that's convenient for sychophants to build careers out of through sheer nepotism. You have to be some kind of sociopath to make it in that kind of environment, and they've already dug their hooks in. They aren't going to just let go of all that power, even if it is unprofitable. Not while they've got massive corporate backing and can morally blackmail them into submission.
