>>115309146>Yeah, but you don't get it until you reach a certain level for each element>>115308121>What good is the Avatar State if you don't have a solid control over all 4 elements?None of this is true, all Avatars automatically get the Avatar State as a base ability, and can already control all four elements in the Avatar State because they get all of the past Avatars' memories. The only reason not to use it is because killing an Avatar in the Avatar State ends the Avatar Cycle and the Avatar spirit will never be reborn again (although in Korra I guess you could do some Spirit World bullshit, but let's just ignore that that series exists).
The part where Azula almost ends the Avatar Cycle when she zaps Aang in the Avatar State does demonstrate why using it is a bad idea. However, the fact that Aang auto-wins as soon as he goes into the Avatar State against Ozai and made zero progress without it with his own, self-mastered four elements, that he achieved in this lifetime, are I think a flaw with the finale that you need to wank your way out of. In the end, the best people can do is that that allowed him to not die, but it's not clear fighting Ozai before the comet with just really good Airbending and then going Avatar State wouldn't have had the same outcome, because waiting is what let Ozai get so overpowered. The decisive shit was the Turtle shit that just appeared (even if they planned it from the beginning, they didn't foreshadow it so it feels last minute) and the Avatar State that Aang could do from a while ago.
It's not the end of the world for the show but it is a bummer and why the Zuko and Azula fight was more hype.
