I was a theory-ignorant lib when I watched TLoK but something about the Amon and Red Lotus plots felt off. Now I can see how horrible the writing was. The authors thinking that anarchy is KILL A QUEEN EVERYBODY FIGHTS is outright ignorance. All the grudges towards bender towards benders disappearing after Amon's defeat. The whole lore being spoiled with God vs. Satan narrative of the second book. Kuvira being a Hitler With Complex History.

It is solved in the time-skip when Raiko, a nonbender, is elected, and the bender's council lose power. I guess popular vote is not as appealing as punching people to the face, which is why it was solved off-screen.

Yeah, this probably is still one of my biggest gripes with LoK. The status quo is “ok” because the “good guy” (Avatar) is in charge and even if the balance is tilted in favor of the Benders, the “good guy” will always be there to make sure things stay tolerable.

Basically, LoK states that all things are kinda okay, and simply need to be managed and tweaked to run properly forever. Essentially, the “end of history” happened when Aang won and Korra is simply steering the ship.

The real world industrial revolution was impactful because it pretty much destroyed centuries of existing social systems within decades and shaped the globe to what it is today. LoK says that even in a rapidly industrializing world, everything is actually fine as is and this millennium old institution is only being threatened by bitter agitators who don’t actually know how good things really are.

It was so frustrating that Kuvira was almost the former but ended up as the latter.

The way it started out there was actual ambiguity to if what Kuvira was doing was right. One one hand she basically violated international law to seize power for herself. On the other hand, if she hadn't done that then control of the Earth Kingdom would go to some spoiled brat who'd probably be a puppet ruler and the conditions that caused the decline of the Earth Kingdom would resume, causing the cycle to repeat itself.

But then they had a bunch of characters talk about her abandoning the Earth Kingdom cities she claims to help and say she's enacting ethnic cleansing. Key phrase is "characters talk about" because they never actually show any of this stuff. We just hear other characters talking about it and there's no way to know if half of it is true.

how would you want the show to address and "solve" it moving forward. In fact, it doesn't ever say that race relations are completely solved with Raiko, just that it's being used as a good first step to help smooth things out and help give a voice to those who feel oppressed. The show just doesn't want to make the entire show about race-relations between benders and non-benders idk what more you'd want

I'd prefer the creators not touching the themes they can't neither comprehend, nor resolve.

One Piece does a better job at racial relationships and politics than Korra that centered the whole plot about re-telling the 20th century's political conflicts.

Then maybe don't set up the argument at all? If the problem is 'we cannot make the resolution easy so fuck it, do it off screen' then the whole thing should have been scrapped. Honestly I think NOT solving it would have worked towards a better villain in Kuvira:

i think people are just unnecessarily hard on Korra which is ultimately a Nickelodean show for kids and teenagers. It's not like the original series had this amazing nuanced political world, the villains and governments in the original are laughable and simplistic. I appreciate Korra for at least exploring more complex themes and villains.

Amon was in an alliance of convenience with the Red Lotus. Both wanted to destroy the current world order but Amon wanted to rebuild it based on his ideals: a society not dominated and defined by benders. Amon's revolution succeeds and Republic City falls under his influence at the end of season 1. Korra only has airbending at the end of the first season.

After the fall of Republic City the world order begins to shift rapidly, with both Zaofu as a Hong Kong esque "free" citystate bankrolling"freedom fighters" to destabilize the Earth Kingdom, which are revealed to be the remnants of the Red Lotus, legendary slayers of both the late Aang and Sokka. After the Red Lotus grows in power and successfully kills the Earth Queen, Zaofu panics and cuts ties with the Red Lotus, realizing they helped create a monster. The Earth Kingdom falls into chaos. At the same time, due to the fall of Republic City and the chaos in the EK, the Northern Water Tribe attempts to annex the south, claiming their lack of spirituality or basic water tribe culture is partially responsible for the increased spirit attacks on humanity. Unaloq is still a villain, but nothing he says is wrong, and the war ends with Korra founding a school of southern spirit benders distinct from their Northern Water Tribe counterparts.

Seasons 3 and 4 deal with the rise of Kuvira and the Avatar attempting to liberate Republic City. Kuvira does eventually manage to wrestle most of the Earth Kingdom away from the Red Lotus after killing them, declaring herself Empress and founding a new dynasty in the process. Korra succeeds in killing Amon but accidentally martyrs him, enraging his loyalists and the non bending populace who prospered under his brief rule. The "liberated" Republic City elects a version of Raiko who is the living personification of "Korra gtfo". Kuvira isn't villainbatted

Anarchism may be vast in its political theory, but in practice it tends to become the quoted "EVERYBODY FIGHTS" and go up in flames the moment it meets real (armed) opposition. Most prominent example I can think of being what it turned into during the Spanish civil war.

Concealable weapons, and weapon ranges would be a firearms advantage over metal benders. How could they bend a rifle aiming at them from 200 ft? Also the concentration that would be needed to somehow catch the bullet once fired and moving at those velocity's has to be impossible.

Well first off, not make the industrialisation as heavy as late 1800s Europe. That's a huge jump. Would be better if the tech was at the time of early 1700s. And the show should be more than just 70 years after TLA. Maybe one Avatar between them, making it 130 years or so

Secondly, have the first theme of the series be colonization, where people in Republic City complain that their land has been taken from them. At the end, RC is declared a separate state, but the former "natives" find a different place nearby to live.

By the time "communism" is dealt with in the second season, it should be well established that there is a class divide between benders and non-benders, and the equalists should be seen and mentioned in the previous season as well. At the end, Amon should be a non-bender, but still be proven wrong, that violence is not the answer, and change really can happen peacefully. (they tried that last part, but not very well)

The "ecoterrorist" chapter should do away with the dualism, and make ecoterrorist. And as the vids brought up, benders shouldn't be more proficient at this time. Make it so some people growing up in RC, though born to two benders, still can't bend. This is a change that's been creeping up on people, and nobody really noticed until now. When confronted with the villain, Korra realizes that while outside of RC, her powers are stronger than inside it.
Now she has to deal with the fact that he's actually right, but he's a zealot.
I still think the plot should end with some sort of link with the spirit world, just not "claimed" to be as dramatic as that, which it was not

Amon wasn't really interested in politics, his sole goal was the elimination of bending and trying to give the trauma and abuse he suffered as a child reason. So, he most likely hijacked some actual political groups, maybe those that wanted to depose the council and get actual elections and turn Republic City into a Republic, then militarized them, radicalized them, and used what he knew of his brother to push the council into more and more extreme reactions until much of the underclass had no choice but to come to him for protection.

Changing Republic City was merely a means to an end of his wider goal of eliminating bending. He didn't have a sound political grounding. His biggest and most important supporter, Hiroshi Sato, was not only the richest man in the city and therefore would actually lose out in any kind of economic reform Amon might put into place to appease the masses, but also was a hate filled man. Amon just told him "yo, kill all the benders, fire war now" and he leapt into it. We can posit that Lieutenant is the same, since he calls himself a true believer and is also a violent dick.

I think the first season should deal with a large event, out of which liberal values are developed. Like a large wave of civil unrest, which ends with a compromise, and the "liberal values" are agreed upon

At the end, the conflicts with Kuvira should make it clearer that these liberal values are hard to maintain when faced with someone that simply don't care for them. I mean, during WW2, Britain wasn't exactly a "liberal democacy", even though they revived those values after the war was over

And honestly, had it not been for the horrors of WW2, then fascism wouldn't have been outright condemned as much as it is today. Spain after all, remained a dictatorship for a while

That being said, i do think moderate change is better than radicalism, it's just difficult to make it interesting in a show made for interesting fighting styles.
The show should've started out with a big conflict where even the "good guys" are bad, and ends with establishment of a constitution that completely overhauls the formerly corrupt system.

I also think the guy in the vids kind of pick the parts he disagrees with, and is just as guilty of strawman the makers, as they are. I mean, in the last vid he says Kuvira is a bad portrayal of fascist, because she was right about some of the things she said. I'm no nazi, but i can admit that even Hitler was right that Germany was badly treated after WW1, and that communism was a legitimate threat. That doesn't mean one-man rule is the solution, which the YTer clearly can't see

I kinda agree, and also kinda disagree. On the one hand it is true that Korra is fighting against too much change by essentially stopping the bad guys from fullfilling their desired outcome. But on the other hand she doesn't oppose anyone of the "good" guys radical shifts political system, like making the earth kingdom a democracy (the second democracy in the world), or the formation of a airbender world police force.

i think that bryke honestly didn't think too much about it and that alot of the political commentary (if there even really is any) mostly comes from viewers. They certainly don't deal with it in any way in the show itself, which is why it is infuriating that critics praise the show for it's politics.

It just doesn't work when they allready are represented in the government as a class. The problem with the RC council was that RC itself wasn't represented but that it was made up of representatives from every other nation, including the air benders.

This is part of the problem with LoK and politics they never manage to set up the conflict in a way that is understandable, they never engage with why this is a problem/not a problem, and they never adress the problem after the season is over. For all we know Raiko being elected is "electing obama solved racism" but for non-benders, which shouldn't be the case if there was a problem to begin with.

One of the things i like about Last airbender is that it doesn't claim to be more than it is. It's just a really well done simple story.

Check out Spanish civil and CNT territories (Orwell's 'Homage to Catalonia' does a good job). Makhnovia is also a decent example. Unfortunately, both didn't get large enough and were crashed by fascists and communists.

I'd make it so Tenzin isn't Aang's son, but grandchild, and is not the only adult Bender.
The "colonization" season actually leads to a big civil war, and Korra slowly learns that "the good guys" are slightly wrong as the natives are pushed around. But on the other hand, the people living there now have lived there their entire lives
The solution is to make RC an independent state with democracy and a constitution, the first time there's a nation not built on the four elements. Some natives stay, but are just as relevant as the rest of people.
Also, RC should have a larger area with smaller industrial Cities along the shores.

In season 2, many of the former anti-colonial rule are still unsatisfied, and switched over to the Equalists, which had already been hinted at in first season.
Although there is a constitution, the governing bodies are indirectly but heavily in favor of benders. If it's intentional oppression is unclear, but Equalists believe it is

The Ecoterrorists aren't powerhungry, they're just mad. The largest change coming out of this, isn't in laws, but in many people migrating out of RC and other large cities, as a result, industry slows down, and people focus more on their own spirituality. Many even start living with the few Air Nomads

In the season about Anarchy, it starts with many areas (especially in EK) figuring if RC can become self-governed, without thoughts of having all benders in one nation, why shouldn't they. Zaheer's anarchists are actually predated by, and supported by secessionists around the Kingdom.
This makes Zaheer less of a "anarchy=lolrandumb", and is more about having small communities
