>>114895394>I don't want 1:1 adaptations because I don't get the point of experiencing the same thing twice but in different media except for some curious instances like with No Country for Old Men.I don't either, but I would rather an adaptation not completely change a character and their motivations because otherwise what's the point of making the adaptation?
A good example of this is Oldboy.
There are plenty of changes moving from the manga to the 2003 film such as entire characters being omitted, plot-points being glossed over, and timelines changing, but it still maintains the core concept of needless revenge.
Granted, the antagonist's reason for wanting revenge is a lot less insane in the movie, but the point remains.
I don't dislike adaptations as a concept, I don't even dislike taking a story somewhere new, I just don't understand why western adaptations always go out of their way to sidestep the tone and intentions of the original work nowadays.
